Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Trailer Hints At The Games' Best Sonic Version
The trailer for the highly anticipated film Sonic the Hedgehog 2 may be hinting at one of the best versions of Sonic from the games: Super Sonic. While the first film brought over most of the core elements from the games, the upcoming sequel seems to be a lot more faithful to the series' rich history, having already given away several huge reveals in the trailers. Some of these things that have already been set up could tease Sonic finally showing up in his ultimate form in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Sonic the Hedgehog follows the titular blue blur as he tries to protect his friends and his home from the villainous Dr. Robotnik and other powerful foes. Originally a series of games created by Sega, the franchise has made the leap into all kinds of different mediums, most significantly a feature film in 2020. Although some things like Sonic's origin are changed in the film, it actually sticks fairly close to the source material, something that can't be said for many other video game film adaptations. Sonic 2 is set to dive even further into the games' surprisingly deep lore, leading to fan anticipation and speculation.
It does vary slightly across each entry, but most of the Sonic games allow the player to transform into an ultra-powerful, yellow version of Sonic near the end of the game. Known as Super Sonic, accessing this typically requires the player to collect the seven hidden Chaos Emeralds, an all-powerful set of jewels that drive most of the games' stories. Although they are referenced in the first Sonic movie, the trailers for Sonic 2 make it seem like they may play a bit more of a prominent role. Due to the appearances of Knuckles, the Death Egg, and the Master Emerald, it seems as if Super Sonic will make his long-awaited debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Knuckles the Echidna, the red foe-turned-friend powerhouse from the games, has been the center of the sequel's marketing campaign so far. While Knuckles is one of the main mascots of the Sonic series, he also is one of the most important characters lore-wise. Knuckles belongs to the Echidna Tribe, an ancient race of Echidnas that live on Angel Island. In the past, the Tribe tries to take the Master Emerald from a powerful entity known as Chaos. Although the Echidna Tribe appears in the first Sonic film, they are not yet shown to have the Master Emerald. This seemingly changes for the sequel, though, as the trailers show Robotnik and Knuckles discovering and wielding the Master Emerald, using it to fulfill their nefarious wishes. The Master Emerald acts as a counterbalance to the Chaos Emeralds, with one being needed to defeat the other. So, if the villains of Sonic 2 are using the Master Emerald, it makes sense to conclude that Sonic will probably have to find the Chaos Emeralds. Furthermore, it can be presumed that in wielding the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic will finally unveil his true power when he transforms into Super Sonic.
While Super Sonic will most likely appear, some are still asking what he will do with all that power. In the first film, Sonic struggles with taking down just a few of Robotnik's robots. Now, Sonic will have to face off against the Death Egg, Robotnik's powerful mech. Although this is not the case in the games, it seems like the Death Egg may be powered by the Master Emerald, as it emanates a green glow and is seen with a tornado that is shooting green lightning. Clearly, Sonic is going to need some magical help equally as powerful as the Master Emerald to stop Robotnik, so, like in the games, he will probably have to go on a journey to collect the Chaos Emeralds. So, it can be expected that Super Sonic will face off against Knuckles, Robotnik, and the Death Egg in an epic final battle. Although it is not yet confirmed, the trailers seem to hint that fans can finally anticipate seeing Super Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
