Forbidden West Has God of War Easter Eggs With Reward For Finding Them

0

The recently launched Horizon Forbidden West contains a few Easter Egg references to 2018’s God Of War reboot, and players can unlock a neat reward for finding them. The highly-anticipated sequel to 2017’s surprise hit Horizon Forbidden West was finally released to rave reviews on PlayStation consoles late last week. Fans and critics praised Horizon Forbidden West for building on what made the original so successful with new enemy types and gameplay mechanics in a vast open-world full of fun details to discover. Less than a week since it launched, Horizon Forbidden West has already become the second-highest selling title on the PlayStation 5, ranking just under 2020’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Horizon’s main protagonist Aloy has made several crossover appearances in the years since Horizon: Zero Dawn was first released, representing the PlayStation brand as a special guest playable character in Fortnite and Genshin Impact. She has also been referenced in other Sony first-party titles, as Ghost Of Tsushima added a Horizon DLC outfit based on her classic Nora huntress attire in the build-up to Horizon Forbidden West’s launch earlier this month. Now, it seems that developer Guerilla Games included a different shout-out to another of PlayStation's successful action titles in Horizon Forbidden West.

As pointed out by a recent video by IGN, Horizon Forbidden West contains multiple Easter Eggs for God Of War within its expansive, post-apocalyptic open world - most of which take the form of collectible wooden figures of Kratos, Atreus, Brok, and Sindri. The first one, Kratos’s Totem of War, can be found in the hills north of Cliffwatch, where players can come across Leviathan ax in a tree near a wooden cabin, not unlike the one Kratos and Atreus live in. Atreus’s Totem of Youth can be located in an archery training ground on the north end of the Isle of Spires. Finally, the Totems of Brotherhood, which symbolize bickering dwarven blacksmiths Brok and Sindri, can be uncovered in No Man’s Land near a downed machine. After collecting all four of these Totems, Aloy can unlock special face paint to wear on her latest adventure.

Just as Aloy has made her triumphant return in Horizon Forbidden West, Kratos and his son Atreus are about to embark on a brand-new journey in the long-awaited God Of War: Ragnarök. Despite rumors that the final chapter of Kratos’s journey through the Nine Realms of Norse mythology could be delayed from its planned release later this year and Sony’s recent radio silence about the impending blockbuster, gaming insider Jason Schreier recently reassured fans that God Of War: Ragnarök is still on track to launch sometime in 2022.

Aside from being owned by the same parent company, God Of War and Horizon Forbidden West are very similar: both are open-world action titles set in a high-fantasy world and put players in the role of a solitary hero tasked with uncovering the mysteries of the world around them and slaying mighty creatures - be they flesh or metal. Fellow Sony-owned developers like Ghost Of Tsushima’s Sucker Punch are currently celebrating Horizon Forbidden West’s successful launch, so it’s nice to see Guerilla Games paying tribute to other hit PlayStation titles like God Of War in its latest blockbuster title.
