Joe Biden will sanction two pro-Russia separatist regions in Ukraine that Putin recognized as independent
President Joe Biden will issue sanctions after Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday recognized two separatist regions in Ukraine as independent entities, the White House has stated.
‘We anticipated a move like this from Russia and are ready to respond immediately,’ White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated on Monday afternoon.
‘President Biden will soon issue an Executive Order that will prohibit new investment, trade, and financing by US persons to, from, or in the so-called DNR and LNR regions of Ukraine.’
DNR and LNR refer to Donetsk and Luhansk, Russian-backed territories in eastern Ukraine. Putin in a fiery speech earlier on Monday said he would recognize their independence, setting the stage for a possible invasion of Ukraine.
Biden’s executive order ‘will also provide authority to impose sanctions on any person determined to operate in those areas of Ukraine,’ Psaki stated.
‘To be clear: these measures are separate from and would be in addition to the swift and severe economic measures we have been preparing in coordination with Allies and partners should Russia further invade Ukraine.’
The Department of State and Treasury is due to provide additional details shortly,.
‘We will also soon announce additional measures related to today’s blatant violation of Russia’s international commitments,’ Psaki said.
She added that the US is continuing to consult with its allies and partners including Ukraine on next steps and Russia’s escalating moves at the border.
