Vote now: Bay Area News Group girls athlete of the week

Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) girls athlete of the week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from Feb. 14-20.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Isabella Balough, Alhambra soccer: Sophomore scored Bulldogs’ only regulation goal during a 1-1 tie with Cardinal Newman in the semifinals of the NCS D-III playoffs. Two scoreless overtimes later, she kicked in another goal as Alhambra won 4-2 on penalty kicks. 

Karena Eberts, Miramonte basketball: Sophomore had 28 points, 18 boards as the 10th-seeded Mats upset No. 7 Mission San Jose in the NCS D-I playoffs. Miramonte lost in the next round, but the 6-0 forward led her team in scoring (13.9 ppg), rebounding (12.8 rbg) and steals (2.4 spg).

Sloan Howard, Skyline soccer: Senior had back-to-back hat tricks during a 2-0 week for the Titans. She totaled eight goals and two assists in the two wins as Skyline improved its season’s record to 6-4-0. The Titans begin the OAL playoffs Tuesday with a home game against Oakland.

Jordan Knight, Granada soccer: Senior team captain scored the game’s only goal on a header late in the second half as the No. 16 seed Matadors stunned top seed Monte Vista in the NCS D-I playoffs. Granada later lost to eighth-seeded Maria Carrillo on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals.

Elle Ladine, Pinewood basketball: Rated the top senior in Northern California by NorCal Preps, the five-star recruit had 30 rebounds in a 62-32 CCS Open Division playoff win over Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Washington signee added 18 points, six assists and three steals.

Riley McNair, Mitty soccer: The senior goalie recorded 13 saves as the sixth-seeded Monarchs bested No. 3-seed Woodside 1-0 in overtime in the CCS Open Division playoffs. It was the eighth shutout for the 5-10 keeper. She has allowed eight goals in 17 games.

Karena Shah, Mountain View soccer: Sophomore scored two goals and added an assist as Spartans began CCS Open Division playoffs with a 4-0 win over Burlingame. She also had a goal earlier in the week during a victory over Los Altos. Has 13 goals and five assists for the season. 

Anela Thomas, St. Mary’s-Berkeley basketball: The 5-8 shooting guard scored 28 points in the tenth-seeded Panthers’ 53-50 upset win over No. 7 Justin-Siena in the NCS D-IV playoffs. Rated one of the 25 best seniors in Northern California by NorCal Preps.

Sabrina Tran, Evergreen Valley wrestling: Led Cougars to their first CCS girls wrestling title with four first-period pins. The junior wrapped up the 106-pound weight division title by pinning her opponent 27 seconds into the championship match.

Elana Weisman, Burlingame basketball: The 6-1 forward had 29 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Capuchino that ended 18-6 regular season. Panthers seeded third in CCS D-II playoffs. The sophomore led Burlingame with 19.4 scoring average and was second in rebounds with 11.2 per game.
