Charlie Cox Says No One Cheered Daredevil Cameo At His NWH Screening

0

Daredevil star Charlie Cox reveals that it was "dead f**king quiet" in the theater during his Spider-Man: No Way Home cameo. Now entering its tenth week in theaters, Spider-Man: No Way Home is heading towards the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box-office. Having matched Avengers: Endgame-levels of anticipation, the Spidey sequel delighted audiences with a number of nostalgic cameos and callbacks. While the film's promotional run teased the return of classic Spider-Man villains such as Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, and Jamie Foxx's Electro, fans rushed to cinemas in the hopes that this would also mean the return of their respective Spider-Man counterparts, and they were not disappointed.

While rumors of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's returns had been circulating for months leading up to Spider-Man: No Way Home's release, another cameo that occurred much earlier on in the film also received an incredibly warm welcome from audiences. The short appearance from Cox's Matt Murdock, otherwise known as Daredevil, certainly set the tone for what was to come in the film's third act. For many, this cameo acted as confirmation of a shared universe between the MCU and Netflix's Marvel series, which also include the likes of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and The Punisher.

Despite the excitement that surrounded this brief appearance, it seems not every theater had the same reaction from its audience - something Cox, unfortunately, learned the hard way. In conversation with the Radio Times, the actor reveals that he snuck into a showing of Spider-Man: No Way Home shortly following its release, after his nephew had sent him a clip of an audience going wild for his cameo. Unfortunately, however, Cox did not have the same experience, saying the viewers at his screening were "dead f**king quiet' when Matt Murdock appeared onscreen. To add insult to injury, Cox shares that his wife had even filmed the moment hoping for a big reaction from the crowd. Check out his full quote below:

It's funny, I got so many text messages and so many calls about that moment in the cinema. My nephew sent me a recording of everyone cheering. So I snuck into a movie theater near where I live and literally stood in the corridor... and, sadly, my experience was it was dead f**king quiet! I was so disappointed – my wife was with me and she was recording me, because it'd be fun to have that moment of everyone cheering, and then... tumbleweed!

In the interview, Cox also teases his future within the MCU, revealing that he knows "something" - but, in true Marvel style, could not elaborate any further. He previously revealed that he was concerned his Daredevil No Way Home cameo would be a letdown after director Jon Watts explained the film would leave a few beats of silence after his appearance to accommodate for a big audience reaction. The 39-year-old said that, when it came to the day of filming, he was "still pretty nervous" despite having played the role of Matt Murdock "every day for almost four years."

Cox's disappointment at his audience's reaction was likely later dispelled following the numerous videos that have appeared on social media following the film's release, which show viewers leaping from their seats at the sight of the Hell's Kitchen vigilante. The cameo immediately led to speculation as to what could lie ahead for Cox's character, with many calling for Daredevil to receive his own stand-alone film as part of his official integration into the MCU. It remains to be seen what's next for Matt Murdock, but for now, he is expected to feature in the additional footage that will accompany Spider-Man: No Way Home's digital release next month.
