Shape And Set-up – Former Leeds United Star Calls For Change Following Anfield Drubbing

Leeds slumped to an embarrassing 6-0 defeat at Anfield against Liverpool on Wednesday evening, which pushed them closer to the dreaded relegation zone.

Only three points separate Leeds from the drop zone and they are on a dreadful run of form where they have lost four of their last five league games.

Liverpool scored three goals in the first half-an-hour of the game and could have scored more before the half time whistle was blown.

Newsome stressed that Bielsa needs to rethink his tactics as heavy losses cannot continue and pointed out that Norwich made it difficult for Liverpool at the weekend by being more stubborn defensively.

The former defender conceded that Leeds were more or less dead at Anfield even before the first half whistle was blown.

The ex-White said on BBC Radio Leeds after the match: “There is got to be a little bit more thought into the shape and the way we set-up.

“Norwich managed to do it on Saturday.

“Don’t get me wrong, they got beat 3-1, but you know, they set themselves in a way that we are going to make it really difficult for you to beat us and when we do get possession, we are going to have a go at you.

“We are going to stay in the game and that’s what they did.

“We were dead and buried after 30 minutes.”

Leeds have another tough game to deal with on Saturday when they take on Tottenham Hotspur, who have lost four of their last five league games as well.
