M5 crash: Six people rushed to hospital in eight-car pileup as road blocked in motorway chaos
SIX people were rushed to hospital today after an eight-vehicle crash brought a major motorway to a standstill.
Emergency services – including an air ambulance – rushed to the M5 just after 10am today following multiple serious collisions on the motorway.
Police said there were multiple collisions along the same stretch of motorway[/caption]The horror smashes happened on the southbound carriageway between Junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare and Junction 22 for Burnham-on-Sea today.
According to Avon and Somerset Police, eight vehicles, including a coach, were involved in three separate crashes along the same stretch of motorway at the same time.
South Western Ambulance Service dispatched a fleet of ambulances shortly after at 10.16am.
Six people were reportedly injured and rushed to hospital – though the severity of these injures are still unclear.

National Highways tweeted shortly before 10.50am: “The M5 is blocked southbound between J21 and J22 following a multiple vehicle collision.
“Traffic Officers and all emergency services including the air ambulance are on scene. Please allow extra time for your journey as delays building.”
Police said in a statement: “Emergency services attended collisions on the M5 southbound between junctions 21 for Weston-super-Mare and 22 for Burnham-on-Sea.
“The first call came in to police just after 10.15am today, Thursday February 24.
“Eight vehicles, including a coach, were involved in three collisions on the same section of road at that time.
“The fire and rescue service and air and land ambulances attended.”
Traffic monitoring site Inrix reported that motorists were held on both sides of the motorway while the air ambulance landed earlier.
The southbound side was blocked but one lane has since reopened.
