Early on February 24, a new wave of Israeli strikes targeted military positions in the outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus.
“At around 1:10 of today’s morning, the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial attack with a salvo of missiles from the north of Lake Tiberias, targeting some positions in the outskirts of the city of Damascus. Our air defenses confronted the aggression’s missiles and shot down most of them,” a military official told the Syrian Arab News Agency.
According to the unnamed official, three Syrian service members were killed in the strikes. Pro-government activists revealed that the casualties were serving in the ranks of the Air Force Intelligence Directorate.
One of the targets of the strikes was reportedly Damarcus International Airport. This is yet to confirmed, however. Israeli targeted the airport on several occasions in the past, supposedly to destroy Iranian weapons shipments en-route to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
This was Israel’s fourth attack on Syria in February. The most recent attack, which took place on the 23rd of the month, targeted two military observation posts in the southern governorate of al-Quneitra.
By intensifying its attack on Syria, Israel is trying to mount more pressure on Damascus and its allies, namely Iran. Tel Aviv hopes that its military pressure will eventually push Iranian forces out from the war-torn country. Nevertheless, there are no signs of this happening any time soon.
