Who is Jeffrey Lieberman and why was he suspended?
JEFFREY Lieberman is an American psychiatrist who made headlines in February 2022 due to his controversial social media posts.
As a result, he was suspended from his job at Columbia University and now many want to know who he is and what he wrote.
Who is Jeffrey Lieberman?
Born in 1948, Lieberman, 74, is known as an American psychiatrist who is considered one of the leading psychiatrists in the nation.
His work specializes in schizophrenia and related psychoses as well as their associated neuroscience and pharmacological treatment.
Along with working as a psychiatrist, Lieberman is also the chair of the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry.
The doctor obtained his bachelor’s degree from Miami University before obtaining his doctorate from The George Washing University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Why was Jeffrey Lieberman suspended?
On February 23, 2022, it was announced that Columbia University had suspended Lieberman “effective immediately,” following his controversial Twitter posts.
In the posts, which are no longer available, Lieberman reportedly referred to a dark-skinned model as possibly a “freak of nature.”

“Whether a work of art or freak of nature she’s a beautiful sight to behold,” he wrote in response to a photo of Nyakim Gatwech, according to the New York Times.
Following the tweets, which were sent on Monday, February 21, 2022, Lieberman then sent out an email to his colleagues apologizing for what he called “racist and sexist” remarks.
“An apology from me to the Black community, to women, and to all of you is not enough,” Lieberman wrote. “I’ve hurt many, and I am beginning to understand the work ahead to make needed personal changes and overtime to regain your trust.”
A spokesperson for Columbia University also told the media outlet that the decision to remove him from his position as psychiatrist-in-chief at Columbia University Irving Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital was final.
“We condemn the racism and sexism reflected in Dr. Lieberman’s tweet and acknowledge and share the hurt, sadness, confusion, and distressing emotions you may be feeling,” Thomas Smith, the new acting director said in an email.

He is reportedly married to Rosemarie Lieberman and is the proud father of two sons.
