Deadpool 3 Updates Are Coming Soon, Says Ryan Reynolds
Ryan Reynolds says that several updates on Deadpool 3 are coming soon. Reynolds first portrayed Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine before starring in the character's first solo film, Deadpool, in 2016. The latter was a much more faithful - and successful - rendition of the Merc with a Mouth and launched the character into the cultural zeitgeist. Reynolds again portrayed the antihero in 2018's Deadpool 2, which also introduced characters like Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz).
Deadpool was created by Rob Liefeld in 1991 as a new addition to the larger X-Men universe and quickly became a hit amongst readers of Marvel Comics. In 2015, a leaked proof of concept video for a Deadpool movie was released. It was directed by Tim Miller, featured Reynolds' voice performance, and had fans clamoring for the full film. The result was an R-rated, violent, and raunchy superhero film, marking a major break from traditional genre fare. However, following the release of the sequel, which was a massive success, pulling in $785 million worldwide, the franchise has hit a snag. With Disney acquiring Fox in 2019, the X-Men stable of characters now falls into the MCU, but none have been officially introduced as of yet, though it looks like a Patrick Stewart cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness may soon change that. Either way, the transition left the franchise in a holding pattern for the last four years with no indication of when Deadpool will reappear.
While Deadpool 3 is confirmed to be happening, nothing concrete has yet been revealed about when the Merc with a Mouth will return. There have been snippets of info on the third installment that have come out over the years, but now it seems like fans are about to learn a lot more. Speaking to Collider, Reynolds (along with The Adam Project director Shawn Levy) said that he's hopeful to have a batch of updates "sooner rather than later," which will be a bit more clear than the rumblings that have popped up throughout the last few years. Here's what Reynolds had to say:
We [Reynolds and Levy] pretty much talk about everything, but I'll say this about that particular subject is I'll have a batch of updates on that sooner rather than later, I hope. So I'll be able to get into stuff about Deadpool a little bit more clearly and definitively down the road.
Reynolds has kept exceptionally busy since Deadpool 2, starring in a number of projects, including The Hitman's Bodyguard franchise, Free Guy, and Red Notice. Both Free Guy and Red Notice are expected to have sequels (multiple sequels in Red Notice's case) and next month will see the release of the Levy-directed The Adam Project on Netflix. In addition, Reynolds will appear in the holiday comedy Spirited with Will Ferrell and is prepping a number of projects to follow after a short acting hiatus. Recently, Reynolds suited up as Deadpool alongside Taika Waititi's Korg for a promo for Free Guy, which many have viewed as Deadpool's introduction to the MCU.
With Bob's Burgers writers Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin already tapped to write the script for Deadpool 3, the next question is who will be directing the film. Tim Miller directed the first film, with John Wick's David Leitch helming the sequel. With Reynolds and Levy already connecting on a creative level to great success, perhaps their partnership can continue with Deadpool 3. At any rate, fans will no doubt be waiting with bated breath for Reynolds' eventual update on the continuing saga of Deadpool 3.
