Batwoman Season 4 Storylines Teased By Showrunner | Screen Rant
Caroline Dries, showrunner for the CW’s Batwoman series has dropped some hints about where the show might go in season 4. Originally created as a vehicle for Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane, Rose exited the series and made way for Javicia Leslie to don the cowl in the form of a completely new character, Ryan Wilder. In February last year, Batwoman season 3 was officially picked up, set to return alongside fellow Arrowverse shows Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash.
With Batwoman season 3 wrapping up this week, Ryan’s Batwoman found herself having to deal with a dastardly plan set in motion by Gotham City’s latest iteration of the Joker, none other than her own brother Marquis Jet (played by Nick Creegan). Throughout season 3, fans of the show have also witnessed series stalwart Mary Hamilton (played by Nicole Kang) transform into a new version of Poison Ivy after being infected by her plants. Meanwhile, other classic Batvillain trophies from the likes of Mister Freeze and Killer Croc also played a major role in the season’s events.
With the third season coming to a close, Dries already has her mind set on where Batwoman season 4 can go in the event of its renewal. Suggesting that she wants to focus on Ryan’s relationship with Gotham City as a whole now that her relationships with the bat family have finally settled down, she recently talked with EW about “dropping a gigantic external conflict bomb onto season 4 to shake it up”. Check out her comments below:
I think it's her relationship with the city of Gotham at this point. The end of season 2, it seemed like Ryan had everything she wanted, and that's why it was so great I think for her to then be rushed with this idea of, well, there is this other family, if you want it, and her realizing, "I want both," and it being really hard. Yeah, and now [it's about], how does her family of Gotham City see her and view her opening up her world a little bit to the city that she represents and is supposed to save every day?
Once she has all of those things, it's sort of like the challenge now for the writing staff and for me is, how do we pull the rug out from underneath all of that without destroying everything that everyone's excited about? Meaning, what the fans are excited about. And that's a huge challenge. It almost, in a way, feels like starting over. But what it really means for us is, I think, dropping a gigantic external conflict bomb onto season 4 to shake it up.
Exactly what that “gigantic external conflict bomb” could be remains to be seen, but no doubt fans will already be running their minds through the expansive Gotham rogues gallery to try and figure out who might show up next. One character who would be sure to shake things up is none other than Jason Todd’s Red Hood. In the penultimate episode of season 3 the original Joker’s toymaker, Kiki Roulette, hinted at Jason’s existence in the Arrowverse as she recalled helping “the Joker beat Robin to death with a crowbar.” While it is not clear whether this universe’s Jason Todd would later be resurrected like his counterparts in the comics and on Titans, and, if so, he would definitely provide the sort of explosive reaction Dries is looking for.
Of course, with Titans season 3 already exploring their own Red Hood storyline, it may seem a little too derivative if Dries elects to do the same. On the other hand, however, Jason returning to Gotham to face Bruce Wayne, only to find him gone and Ryan operating in his place would be an interesting new twist on the story. Whatever Dries and her team come up with, fans will certainly be keeping their fingers crossed for an official Batwoman season 4 renewal announcement.
