Worst Roommate Ever: Where Is Youssef Khater Now? All Updates

0

Warning: Spoilers for Netflix's Worst Roommate Ever!

Where is Youssef Khater, the con artist from Netflix’s new docuseries Worst Roommate Ever? Audiences were introduced to Khater in episode 3, titled “Marathon Man,” which delves into the life and crimes of the charismatic hustler. Youssef Khater is a man who was a marathon runner convicted of multiple fraud charges and attempted murder in Chile in April 2011 but only had a minimal sentence. Netflix’s new series Worst Roommate Ever is a five-part show focusing on seemingly innocent neighbors who end up being criminals, scammers, and, at times, even killers. Netflix is known for its hard-hitting crime documentaries, and Worst Roommate Ever is just that.

Youssef Khater, at the time, was a 33-year-old man of Lebanese descent, yet posed as a Palestinian marathon-runner and hosted a 12-bedroom hostel in Chile. Carlos Medina and Carlos Krauss of Federacion Palestina sponsored Khater to run the marathon, giving him $8,000 to enter the race, which he ended up stealing. Aside from scamming, he also tried to kill and bury one of his hostel roommates Callie Quinn, to keep the security deposits he stole from his housemates. Quinn survived, but Khater escaped; as she and her lawyer tried to arrest him, they learned that he also stole over $50,000 from British runner Dominic Rayner and was also arrested back in 2009 in Denmark for arson, embezzlement, and fraud, but never appeared for trial. Khater was finally caught in July 2011, according to the Netflix crime documentary, but was only in prison for a few years.

Khater was only sentenced to 600 days in prison, and after being released in 2014, he has been well under the radar. In December 2015, Khater was said to be going under the alias of Josef Maria and ran another marathon in Costa Rica (via Texas Monthly). He wasn’t spotted again until 2017, when he was arrested in Puerto Viejo for committing massive fraud but was released shortly after. Unfortunately, Khater is likely still scamming people under different names, as his last confirmed sighting was in Denmark back in 2018. His most used names under an alias are Joseph Carter and Josef Maria, so he may be under one of these names, scamming hundreds of innocent people as shown in the Netflix documentary.

It’s incredibly unsettling that Youssef Khater hasn’t been seen or heard from since 2018, as he is likely being protected somehow. He has been referred to as charismatic, attractive, and even mesmerizing by past girlfriends and friends, which leaves him as an unlikely criminal. With no knowledge of his past, he can easily persuade and scam hundreds of people again, as he has gotten away from it time and time again with little repercussions. The fact that he was only sentenced to 600 days after literally trying to kill and bury his housemate alive highlight’s his rather scary luck.

Since there has been little to no reporting on Khater since 2018, the success of Netflix’s new crime docuseries will hopefully bring out more sightings of him. He is known for escaping his crimes, and he has done an excellent job at fleeing countries before he gets caught. Maybe, someone will be watching Worst Roommate Ever and recognize Youssef; those he scammed and almost killed can finally get the justice they deserve, and he won’t be able to hurt any more people.
