Guardians Of The Galaxy: 7 Things The MCU Movies Did Better Than The Comics, According To Reddit

The Guardians of the Galaxy films are known for the eccentric, universe-saving cast of characters and the supreme soundtrack that accompanies them. The movies, however, differ in quite a few ways from the comic books that bore them.

While it is commonplace for comic book fans to critique the film adaptations of their favorite stories, there are some points on which fans can agree that the movies did better than the comics. In Guardians of the Galaxy, there are a few character choices that differed from the comics, but felt a lot better to audiences.

When it comes to Star-Lord himself, Peter Quill is a lot darker in most of the comic books than he is in the films. Many fans have said that they prefer the film's funky, goofy rendition of Quill to his angsty comic book form.

Redditor BasedFunnyValentine sums up this point nicely by saying, "Changes I like: [Quill] being a fun space pirate instead of a brooding angsty 'legendary Starlord' with a weird cyborg eye..." It seems like audiences respond a lot better to movie Quill's amusements than comic Quill's blues. The character demonstrates some pretty eccentric and unmistakable traits throughout the MCU.

In the comics, Groot is a lot smarter than he is in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. However, some fans have agreed that the movie portrayal of the beloved character is actually a lot more compelling.

On character choices concerning Groot, Redditor decross20 writes, "Groot in the comics I feel was smarter overall, but I thought it was a great choice to make Groot simultaneously the most innocent and dangerous of the Guardians. He was an absolute standout, with amazing facial expressions." This Redditor really captures all of the reasons that Groot so easily became a fan-favorite after the release of the films, besides his best translated quotes.

In Guardians of the Galaxy, viewers see Peter's mom die from cancer on earth when he is eight years old. In the comics, however, the story is a bit different. Aliens come down to earth and they kill Meredith when Peter is ten.

In response to the change of Meredith's death, Redditor mrmoneymanguy writes, "That's an odd change to make, but I kinda like her dying of cancer more, because no superhero can stop it." This puts the change into perspective by showing just how helpless Quill is in his mother's death.

Some movie-goers and comic-readers have noted that Gamora seems to have changed a bit, mainly in that her appearance is less sexualized in the film than the comics.

About Gamora, Redditor BasedFunnyValentine says, "[Gamora] was more 'evil' and sexualised in DnA run. She didn't change much but [I] prefer the costume." The skintight leotard of power that Gamora wears in DnA run is certainly more provocative as compared to her chic, black, head-to-toe leathery look in the movie.

In the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Peter Quill displays much more character development than in the comics. Rather than starting as a snarky character who still cares for his friends and the universe, he is a self-centered thief. The movie follows him as he finds his crew and becomes a better human being for it.

Redditor decross20 hits the nail on the head with the comment, "In the movie, he's a thief who only cares about himself, but I thought that was a good choice to give him an arc, where he learns to care about others... It'd be kinda a boring story if he started out wanting to save the world. You need an arc of growth!" In fact, Peter Quill learning to love his little family of galaxy-defenders is one of the most endearing aspects of the movie.

Perhaps the most engaging aspect of Drax's personality in the film is his extreme literal-mindedness. Fans actually see this comedic trait as an improvement on comic book Drax, who is more plainly dumb than literal.

Redditor DeltaTester expresses their opinion on the matter, saying, "Literal-minded Drax is infinitely more interesting than just-plain-stupid Drax." No-nonsense Drax makes the movie adaptation of his character all-the-more dynamic, and it is part of the reason that Drax is Dave Bautista's best role.

The Classic Guardians comics include Classic Yondu, who is most similar to movie Yondu. Fans have expressed that movie Yondu is portrayed a lot better than in the comics.

Redditor Hellmark says on Yondu, "I like movie Yondu, but I hate seeing him in the comics because I prefer classic Yondu. I know that they are two different characters, and that Classic Yondu is a descendant of movie Yondu..." All the facts check out in this comment, and plenty of other fans agree in their love for movie Yondu, who makes Guardians one of Michael Rooker's best movies.
