Refugees from Ukraine need not apply for asylum in EU, home ministers decide

THE INTERIOR MINISTERS of the EU on Thursday decided, for the first time ever, to activate the temporary protection directive to offer quick and effective protection to people fleeing the invasion of Ukraine by President Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that nearly 1,050,000 people have fled Ukraine since 24 February 2022.
