One of the problems inherent in our political system and its recurring election timetable is that governments' important societal decisions are too often tinged by political calculations. This is especially true in an election year when budgets, announcements of programs, initiatives and most decisions often are tailored to what might be popular, as opposed to what may be necessary. Heightened partisanship during a campaign also lends itself to more polarizing rhetoric and less collaboration among members of different parties in a legislature.
