The centre of Ottawa was under siege for three weeks, with residents subject to harassment, law-breaking and fear of leaving their homes. As a psychiatrist who works downtown, I know of one patient who was assaulted by protesters and one carer who was racially abused during the occupation. Also, two out-patients I see regularly had to leave downtown as their mental health has deteriorated. Both saw an increase in anxiety and a significant increase in suicidal thoughts.
