How To Make Your Galaxy S22's Screen Darker With New 'Extra Dim' Mode

Samsung's Galaxy S22 series have a new 'Extra Dim' mode for those times when the standard screen brightness can feel blindingly intense. Every model of the Galaxy S22 comes with an incredibly bright screen that's easy to see even in outdoor lighting, which is a welcome upgrade. However, in a purposely dark environment, a dimmer screen is what's needed. Thankfully Samsung now makes that possible with its new 'Extra Dim' mode.

With up to 1,750 nits of screen intensity, Samsung's Galaxy S22-Plus and S22 Ultra feature some of the brightest smartphone displays ever made. The Galaxy S22 reaches 1,300 nits which still beats many competing flagships. However, brighter screens do have a downside. They consume more battery power, get hotter and work almost like a flashlight in dark rooms.

Samsung's Galaxy S22 series has a new Extra Dim mode hidden in the Accessibility settings that's perfect for reading or watching a video at night without bothering anyone who might be sleeping, and it's nice in other circumstances. To find this option, the user should open the Settings app, scroll down to find and tap on the 'Accessibility,' then 'Visibility' to see several ways to affect the display clarity. Then, scrolling down tapping 'Extra Dim' will reveal more options. The toggle switch to enable Samsung's 'Extra Dim' mode is at the top, and there's a slider to adjust intensity below.

Lowering the Galaxy S22's screen brightness can sometimes reduce eye fatigue, although it's possible to make it too dim and hard to read, which can aggravate tired eyes. A lower intensity display is also handy when stargazing since any flash of bright light causes the human eye to adjust rapidly, losing night vision that takes several minutes or more to improve. Texting in a movie theater or other intentionally dark area with a blindingly bright phone is annoying for others, and Extra Dim mode provides an easy fix that users can place in quick settings for instant access.

There are two ways to make Extra Dim easier to reach on any model of the Galaxy S22. A toggle switch in Settings gives an option to show an "Extra Dim shortcut" as an Accessibility control. However, this appears as an icon on the screen, which might be going a bit too far. Placing an Extra Dim switch in the Quick Panel makes more sense for most users. The user should swipe down from the top, then swipe left and tap the 'Plus' icon to add a new control, then drag Extra Dim to where it's preferred in the Quick Panel. These shortcuts make the feature much easier to use and help to tame the super-bright displays on Samsung's Galaxy S22 series.
