Star Wars Is Making The Damerons Just As Important As The Skywalkers

0

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars #21

The latest issue of Marvel Comics' Star Wars further confirms that the Damerons were just as crucial to saving the galaxy as the Skywalkers. While the bloodline of Anakin Skywalker may look to be more influential with a larger impact on the saga, Resistance pilot and general Poe Dameron and his parents were all critical to the Skywalkers' success. Case in point, the newest issue of Star Wars teases that Luke Skywalker, his sister Leia, and her future husband Han Solo might have never destroyed the second Death Star if it wasn't for Poe's parents who were both Rebellion heroes who fought alongside them.

Shara Bey was a pilot of the Rebellion while Kes Dameron was a Pathfinder, part of an elite unit of Rebel scout commandos. Fighting the Empire as husband and wife, Shara and Kes sought to save the galaxy and end the Empire to make it a better and safer place for their young son Poe. However, recent issues have seen Shara trapped aboard an Imperial Star Destroyer after crashing her A-wing inside its hangar bay. As such, she's been holding out for the Rebellion to come and rescue her while sending them Imperial secrets, hiding within the massive ship's inner workings and disguising herself as a stormtrooper just like Han Solo and Luke when they rescued Leia from the first Death Star.

While Kes is determined to rescue his wife in Star Wars #21 from Charles Soule, Marco Castiello, and Ramon Rosanas, he's had to hold back until the Rebellion can approve a mission. Eventually, Shara decides to try and save herself, scoping out the Star Destroyer's hangar to find a ship she can steal. She eventually settles on a Lambda-class shuttle, which might very well be the same shuttle the Rebellion used to get Luke, Leia, and Han on the forest moon of Endor. Seeing as how it was never explained how that shuttle was recovered, it seems as though the answer lies with Shara once she escapes the Tarkin's Will. This issue precedes other series such as Shattered Empire where Shara and Kes are critical allies to Luke, Leia, and Han following Return of the Jedi and its aftermath. Combined with the future exploits of Poe, who helps lead the Resistance alongside Leia and Rey as seen in the sequel trilogy, it's clear that the Skywalkers wouldn't have gotten very far without the Damerons.

While Shara is eventually discovered and stabbed by the Star Destroyer's Commander Zahra, Kes is on his way to bring his wife home. As such, they'll likely bring this new Imperial shuttle with them as a spoil of war to be used by the Skywalkers in Return of the Jedi. Clearly, Poe Dameron has some dynamic role models and will eventually become inspired by his heroic parents, becoming a pilot himself with the Resistance and eventually a general following Leia's death, having served under her just as his parents did during the Galactic Civil War.

While the Skywalkers naturally have the bigger spotlight and focus in Star Wars, the Damerons shouldn't be discounted. Without their efforts in the original and sequel eras, the galaxy might have never been saved from the oppression of the Empire or the First Order that followed. As such, the comics help prove that the Damerons have a family legacy that's just as important as the Skywalkers in the Star Wars galaxy.
