‘They’re a shambles’ – Everton defence not good enough for CHAMPIONSHIP and in serious trouble, slams Jamie Carragher

JAMIE CARRAGHER ripped into Everton’s ‘Championship’ back four after they were torn apart at Tottenham.

The Toffees were hammered 5-0 at Spurs on Monday night, with all of the goals coming inside the first 55 minutes.

Frank Lampard’s side sit 17th in the Premier League table and are just one point above the bottom three.

Everton have only won once away all season – which was back in August at Brighton – and have now tasted defeat eight times in their last nine fixtures on the road.

And Liverpool legend turned Sky Sports pundit Carragher admits he fears the worst for the Blues – unless Lampard can solve their away form as he took aim at their poor backline.

He said: “When you talk about a team being too good to go down, well that’s because we look at Everton’s strikers Richarlison, [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin – this back four is a Championship back four.

“There’s absolutely no doubt about this whatsoever.”

Carragher added: “The big problem for them is the away form and this goes back way before Frank Lampard was in charge, it goes back a long time.

“Their away form has to improve quickly if they are to get away from the relegation zone.”

Meanwhile, Lampard’s own uncle Harry Redknapp also admitted Everton were in ‘deep trouble’ as he also slammed their defence.

He told talkSPORT: “They are just a very poor group of players. I watched it on TV and Jamie Carragher said it was a Championship back four.

“They really are a poor outfit. They are average players, average characters. Frank has his work cut out.

“If he keeps them up then he’s done very well because they are in desperate trouble.

“It’s down to recruitment. I don’t care who you think you are, you could put Pep [Guardiola] in there and he’s not suddenly going to turn that group around.

“They aren’t good enough and have a very average group of players. He’s got a massive job on his hands.”
