Wildcats clip Eagles’ wings 5-2
Brooklyn Kalmikov and Yoan Loshing had three points each to lead the Wildcats to a 5-2 victory over the Cape Breton Eagles, Sunday at Avenir Centre. Kalmikov scored twice while Loshing, Alexis Daniel and Manix Sarrasin added one each.
Daniel scored the only goal of the opening period with under seven minutes to go, racing in on the right wing and beating Cape Breton goalie Remi Delafontaine on the short side under his glove.
Kalmikov's first goal of the game doubled the Moncton lead more than 13 minutes into the second. The Wildcats' leading scorer took a pass near the bottom of the left circle and snapped a shot inside the left post to make it a 2-0 game.
It became 3-0 four minutes later when Loshing took a feed in the slot and ripped home a wrist shot for a power play goal. The Wildcats led 3-0 after forty minutes.
Cape Breton scored two goals fifty seconds apart before the middle of the third to cut its deficit to 3-2.
Manix Sarrasin responded with his first QMJHL goal in his first QMJHL game. The 16-year-old 2021 draft pick carried the puck down the right wing on a 2-on-1. His initial shot and rebound were stopped, but he eventually banked the puck off Delafontiane and under the crossbar to restore a two-goal lead for the the Wildcats.
Kalmikov capped the scoring with an empty-netter.
