Obi-Wan Is Broken & Faithless In New Star Wars Show, Says Ewan McGregor

0

Ewan McGregor's Star Wars character is in a dark place at the start of the Obi-Wan Kenobi show. With roughly three months to go before the next Lucasfilm Disney+ series debuts, marketing for the project has finally begun. While McGregor can't talk specifics about his upcoming return as Obi-Wan Kenobi, he shares what his character's state of mind is at the beginning of the project.

After years of rumors, Lucasfilm finally confirmed in 2019 that a new Obi-Wan Kenobi narrative is coming, although instead of a movie, it has been reworked to be a limited series. The show takes place 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and will see the titular character in hiding from the Galactic Empire. At this point, Lucasfilm has yet to release any official footage from the project, but with the arrival of its first-look images, fans can expect that a trailer is coming sooner rather than later.

In EW's feature of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, McGregor also provides fresh information about what his character is up to when the series kicks off in May 2022. According to the beloved Star Wars actor, viewers will "find Obi-Wan at the beginning of our story rather broken, and faithless, and beaten, somewhat given up." Unfortunately, he didn't give any specific details about the status of the galaxy during this point in time. In any case, this is more than enough to further hype up fans, especially those who are looking forward to seeing a different side to the Jedi Master.

Obi-Wan's desolate and hopeless state at the beginning of the Obi-Wan Kenobi show makes sense. At this point in the canon timeline, it has been a decade since Order 66, which forced him and the rest of the Jedi to flee, although most of them and their Padawans were killed. Lucasfilm has purposefully revealed very little about Obi-Wan's adventures in-between the prequel and original trilogies; as revealed in the original Star Wars film, he had been quietly keeping an eye on Luke Skywalker. That's everything he needed to do and he did it well; he successfully set Anakin Skywalker on a path in becoming a Jedi. But, it's also possible that there are other factors that factored in how Obi-Wan is feeling when the upcoming Disney+ venture picks up his story. And that could play into the show's narrative.

Ultimately, Obi-Wan has to get himself together as the show will also see him face Darth Vader again. As revealed by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Hayden Christensen will also appear in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series as the Sith Lord, resulting in the former allies squaring off again, which is dubbed the "rematch of the century." Besides that, not much else is known about the show's narrative thus far, but considering the fact that Obi-Wan remained steadfast in his role as Luke's protector in Tatooine, it's safe to say that that the series will leave him in a much better mental state than when it started.
