One-Punch Man's Least Likely Hero Actually Survived Being Ripped in Half
Spoilers for chapter 157 of One-Punch Man ahead!
The character of Amai Mask (sometimes translated Sweet Mask) in One-Punch Man may be well-loved in-universe, but he's given readers a very different impression from his aggressive personality and dismissiveness towards Saitama and other more popular characters. Still, his brutal death back in chapter 139 at the hands of Fuhrer Ugly felt a bit too cruel towards a character who was still nominally a hero, seeing as he was ripped in half in a fit of jealousy over his looks. The scene was shocking, to be sure, but the real surprise is in chapter 157, where Amai Mask is decidedly not dead after all.
Amai Mask first appeared early on as the top hero in class A, doing interviews and appearing before an adoring public who loved him largely for his looks. The darker side of the character appeared when he confronted Genos, revealing that Amai Mask sees himself as the gatekeeper for class S, and didn't appreciate Genos shooting straight to the top when he registered as a hero. More recently, he was also the only class A hero to invite himself to the attack on the Monster Association headquarters, and his rapid defeat suggested that the Hero Association was right not to send in anyone of lower ranks.
Chapter 157 mysteriously opens with Amai Mask waking up in one piece, despite how clearly he was shown to have been bisected previously. His face was also beaten in by Fuhrer Ugly's "face destroying punch," yet it's equally intact. When he gets up, no one is around except for a man he doesn't recognize, who is eventually revealed to be a slimmed-down version of the class S hero, Pig God. Even stranger, in spite of the horrible injuries, Amai Mask's main concern is the destruction of his pants when he was split in twain, and his declarations of vengeance against the (already defeated) Fuhrer Ugly don't even mention his physical damage.
Since only a few hours have passed at most since chapter 139, it seems likely that Amai Mask has some kind of superpowered regeneration ability, which would be highly unique amongst One-Punch Man's heroes. The only other character with such an ability is Zombieman, who was explicitly the result of an experiment at the House of Evolution, and isn't considered fully human by some as a result. Between what has been shown of Garou's transformation and this fact about Zombieman, the evidence suggests Amai Mask might also not be entirely human, despite how he looks. If confirmed, this reveal would be particularly ironic, since Amai Mask had previously accused Zombieman of secretly being a monster in chapter 91, when the truth is that Amai Mask is just as close to being a monster, if not closer.
It's not clear whether the other heroes were aware of Amai Mask's apparent death or not; Zombieman and Child Emperor were close enough that they might have witnessed it happening, but no one is shown reacting to it. How the class S heroes will react when they find out could be quite interesting, but fans will have to wait for future chapters of One-Punch Man to find out.
