A new Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie poster perfectly recreates the cover image from the original video game of the same name. Released in 2020, the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was a big hit with audiences and raked in over $306 million at the box office. The film introduced audiences to the titular blue hedgehog, voiced by Ben Schwartz, as first depicted in the Sonic video games in the early 1990s. Not long after the first film proved to be a success, a sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, was announced.
The sequel will pit Sonic once more against the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and introduce several fan-favorite characters from the games, including Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba, and Tails, voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey. A trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 teases plenty of action, a fun partnership between Sonic and Tails, and a new evil scheme (and larger mustache) from Dr. Robotnik. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will also see the return of James Marsden, Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell, Tika Sumpter, and Adam Pally, and is expected to release in early April.
With the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 fast approaching, marketing material for the film continues to ramp up, which includes the release of a brand new poster. In a new post on Twitter, film critic Scott J. Davies aptly spots that the newest poster for the film is a near-perfect recreation of the poster for the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 video game. Check out the brand new poster as well as Scott's comparison Tweet below:

Although certain small elements of the cover design are changed, like the poses of Sonic and Tails, the essence of the poster perfectly captures that of the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game. The poster hints that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 won't be forgetting the beloved source material upon which it is based. It even features the tagline "Welcome to the next level," another video game allusion. Upon the unveiling of Sonic's character design in early 2019, the more humanistic take on Sonic prompted an outcry from viewers. The criticism was so widespread that the entire film was delayed in order for Sonic to be completely redesigned to be more in line with his video game counterpart.
The game-inspired poster for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would suggest that staying true to the video game upon which the movie is based is top of mind for the film's creative team this time around. Trailers for the film already show that both Tails and Knuckles, like Sonic, look very much like their video game counterparts. Even Dr. Robotnik's mustache is bigger and wackier this time around, looking much more like the character does in the games. With the movie releasing on April 8th, audiences don't have long to wait now before they can watch Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for themselves to see just how true the movie stays to the original video game.
