Issa Rae Responds To Spider-Woman Question In Spider-Verse 2

0

Issa Rae coyly responds to the question of whether she's portraying Spider-Woman in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). The animated film serves as a sequel to 2018's hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as Miles Morales is reunited with Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen with the invitation to venture through the multiverse. The two young heroes must team up with a variety of other new and familiar Spider-People to face a powerful villain with the ability to affect multiple realities.

Shameik Moore is returning to lead the cast of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) as Miles alongside Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099 and Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker/Spider-Man. The animated sequel hails from directing team Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson with a script from producing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings co-writer David Callaham. Though the film is reported to introduce multiple Spider-People to the fold, one star is keeping mum on their supposed role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One).

While appearing on the red carpet for the Critic's Choice Awards, Issa Rae was asked by Entertainment Tonight about her potential role as Spider-Woman in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). Rather than offer any details on her reported role in the film, Rae kept mum and played coy about her work in the animated sequel. See what Rae said below:

"I don't know if I'm allowed to say that, but I love Spider-Man and would love to be doing it if I were."

News of Rae's casting for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) first broke in mid-2021 with the six-time Emmy-nominated creator/star of HBO's Insecure having been reported to star as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman in the film. In the months since, the only update audiences have truly been given for the highly anticipated animated sequel is a brief teaser released in December confirming the film would be split into two parts and seemingly see Spider-Man 2099 and Miles fighting one another. With the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) trailer largely keeping other variants outside of Miles, Miguel and Gwen under wraps, it's understandable Rae would have to keep mum on the details of playing Spider-Woman in the animated sequel.

Interestingly, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) may not be the stopping point for Rae as Spider-Woman on the big screen. In addition to the confirmed third film in the franchise, Spider-Women spin-off film is currently in development at Sony to be centered on Gwen, Cindy Moon/Silk and Jessica Drew, with producer Amy Pascal revealing upon the sequel's initial announcement that the upcoming film would serve as a launching pad for the story. Only time will tell what's to come from Rae's Spider-Woman when Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) hits theaters on October 7.
