Horizon Forbidden West's Glider Cleverly Used To Avoid Tallneck Climb

0

A Horizon Forbidden West player recently used Aloy’s newfound gliding ability to bypass a difficult climbing section and override a Tallneck. The post-apocalyptic world of Horizon Forbidden West is filled with wild and unique Machines for players to hunt and tame, and one of the most memorable is the massive Tallnecks that freely roam the landscape that Aloy travels in her quest to save the world by restarting the ancient terraforming AI GAIA. These large, brachiosaurus-like machines are so popular that they have even become the subject of a special Horizon Forbidden West LEGO set, complete with an Aloy Minifigure to climb atop them.

Indeed, the Tallnecks function differently than the other Machines that populate the world of Horizon Forbidden West. Instead of destroying or riding them, Aloy has to scale their bodies and Override them atop their platform-like heads. Since the Tallnecks function as moving communication towers for other Machines, doing this will allow Aloy to access their databases and gain valuable map information and insights about areas of interest. However, climbing the legs of the still-moving robots can be easier said than done, and if Aloy doesn’t time her jumps and glides just right she could find herself crushed beneath Forbidden West Tallnecks' massive metal hoofs.

One lucky Reddit user by the handle of UnHumChun recently managed to sidestep the issue of climbing a Tallneck altogether, as shown in a Horizon Forbidden West glider gameplay video they posted to r/horizon (via GamesRadar). In the clip, Aloy takes a running leap off a snowy cliff, gliding through the air toward the nearby Tallneck wandering The Strand of the Sentinels. With near precise timing, the Savior of the Claim manages to land atop the great Machine’s head, skipping through a normally difficult climb and overriding the Tallneck without breaking a sweat. UnHumChun’s video currently sits at 2.6 thousand upvotes, and fellow Horizon Forbidden West players have complimented them in the replies, describing their own difficulties in trying to scale the ever-imposing Tallnecks.

So far, a very small number of Horizon Forbidden West players have managed to clear the game’s long story campaign, but its high review scores seem to indicate that fans are enjoying the journey. The sequel to Guerrilla Games' surprise PS4 hit Horizon Zero Dawn has been viewed as an improvement over the original in virtually every way, with extra attention going towards Horizon Forbidden West’s new gliding and swimming mechanics. Even legendary horror director John Carpenter has had good things to say about Horizon Forbidden West, especially in regards to voice actress Ashley Burch’s performance as Aloy.

Part of what makes Horizon Forbidden West such a popular and successful game is the freedom it grants players in exploring its vast open-world. This freedom leads fans to discover new and creative ways to traverse the rough terrain of the titular Forbidden West or defeat a particularly difficult Machine. With enough skill and a high enough vantage point, Horizon Forbidden West players can even glide their way atop a towering Tallneck and save hours that would have been spent trying to climb the moving beast.
