She continued: “It started out as a kind of therapy – gardening & nature helped distract me when life felt on the edge and then, thanks to the team @loveyourgarden, I took it a step further & turned our garden into a beautiful factory for physical healing too.

“They even helped me carry Derek outside so he could see the fruits of our labour too – a very emotional moment.

“I really hope you feel inspired & comforted by the programme – do let me know!!!”

Kate opened up about how gardening had been a comfort to her as she nursed Derek earlier this week.

She said: “We want to make the garden into something more than just space to be. I really want to grow some plants that will actually improve our health and wellbeing,” she says on an upcoming episode of Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Garden.

“If you look past the initial beauty of the plants, it can give you so much more.

“I haven’t quite proved you can grow yourself well but I think I’ve definitely learnt you can grow yourself happier.”

In the episode Kate will also visit Kew gardens where she’ll learn about the medicinal benefits of plants, inspired in her own garden to create a border of plants filled with antioxidant benefits, a separate tea garden and an aromatherapy garden.

Growing four types of mint and swathes of lavender, she’s inspired to create her own herbal teas and room spray.
