Tottenham have been backed to sign Joe Gomez from Liverpool this summer, allowing the defender to create a ‘formidable’ partnership with two current Spurs stars.
Antonio Conte has had to deal with plenty of defensive problems since moving to North London earlier this season. He does not seem to trust summer signing Emerson Royal, leading to rumours of a new right wing-back coming in.
Tottenham are looking into the possibility of signing Tino Livramento from Southampton. And club insider John Wenham reckons Harry Winks or Cameron Carter-Vickers may be used to help the deal go through.
In the mean time, Conte will have to rely on former Wolves man Matt Doherty on the right flank.
The Italian coach also wants to improve his centre-back options amid concerns over Davinson Sanchez. Team-mate Eric Dier has come in for criticism in recent months, too.
One player Spurs could turn to is 24-year-old Gomez. He is gearing up for a Liverpool exit after falling behind Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order.
Gomez has also had to deal with several injuries while on Merseyside. Clearly, he wants a fresh start, and one pundit reckons Spurs could provide him with that.
Joe Gomez to Spurs would be a ‘great move’
When asked about Gomez joining Spurs, Noel Whelan said (via CaughtOffside): “I think it’d be a great move.
“You’ve got Ben Davies playing as a left-sided centre-back. Really, you’d like to push him a little bit further forward in that left wing-back role if possible.”
Whelan reckons Gomez could improve a couple of existing Spurs players, too. “If you had somebody like Gomez, with his experience at the back, along with Dier and [Cristian] Romero, what a formidable three that would be,” he added.
“I think it’d really make a difference having somebody like Joe Gomez back there.
“He’d be going back home, pretty much. Charlton is where he started. It would make sense to want to go back to that neck of the woods.
“For Tottenham, I think that would be an improvement on what they need in terms of that defensive stability. A back three you can really trust.
“He’s somebody that knows and is proven in the Premier League.”
Tottenham make approach for Barcelona attacker
Meanwhile, Spurs have made a ‘formal offer’ to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, according to a report.
Spanish outlet AS (as cited by Sport Witness), claim Depay could leave the Camp Nou after just one season. What’s more, it’s stated Tottenham have lodged a ‘formal offer’. At present, the proposal has not drawn a clear response from the Spaniards.
The article cites reliable Spanish journalist Gerard Romero. While details on the exact nature of the apparent offer are slim, it’s noted any move would be in the upcoming summer and cost a fee.
The report goes on to detail why Barca would sell, noting the club sense an opportunity to make a quick buck on a star who is no longer a regular starter.
Though their finances have recovered to some degree, Barcelona are not out of the deep water yet. Selling a free agent signing for a transfer fee after just 12 months would represent savvy business.
