Russia's crackdown on media: 'Until Russia's war in Ukraine, you did have independent press'

0
As the Kremlin intensifies its crackdown on press freedom, France 24 is joined by Dr. Aglaya Snetkov, Lecturer of International Politics at University College London (UCL), and Christophe Deloire, Secretary-General and Executive Director of Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Over the past two decades, Russian legislation has been rolling back press freedoms, making it very challenging for journalists and news outlets to offer reliable reporting. And now, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, combined with fresh new legislation clamping further down on independent media, "international reporting in the field will be very difficult and a lot of journalists will be very fearful of continuing their reporting," explains Dr. Snetkov. And she predicts that obtaining "independent information will get harder and harder." According to Mr. Deloire, "the most dangerous thing right now is for Ukrainian journalists." They are not per se veteran war reporters. "They didn't travel to uncover a war," he explains. "The war came to them."
