Schoolgirl, 12, rushed to hospital with serious injuries after crash near railway station

A SCHOOLGIRL is fighting for her life in hospital after a horror crash near a railway station.

The 12-year-old girl sustained “serious injuries” in the collision around 3.30pm in Stockport, Manchester.

Police have closed a number of major roads as a result as well as a road leading to another nearby railway station.

A cordon has been in place since around 4.10pm, shortly after North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) were called out to the scene and the girl was immediately rushed to hospital.

A spokesperson for NWAS said: “We were called to [an] RTC involving a pedestrian at 3.37pm. A 12-year-old girl has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.”

There is still a large police presence on the road with paramedics also in attendance, and members of the public have been advised to avoid the area, reports Manchester Evening News.

Motorists have been advised to find alternative routes while Stagecoach says bus services in the area have been affected.

In a tweet, a Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson wrote: “Garners Lane – Stockport. The road is currently closed between Bramhall Lane and Rostherne Road. Please consider alternative routes such as Adswood Road which remains open.”

A spokesperson for Stagecoach Manchester and Wigan wrote on Twitter: “Route 374. Due to an RTC on Garners Lane, which has closed the road in both directions, the 374 will be diverting via Shaw Heath and Cale Green.

“We will announce when the road reopens. We are sorry for the inconvenience that this may cause.”

Greater Manchester Police has been approached for comment.
