How I Met Your Father: 8 Characters That Could Be The Father So Far
How I Met Your Father has wrapped up its first season and audiences are reeling with the possible directions the show could take going forward. Like its predecessor, How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM), the show largely revolves around a parent telling their child the story of how they met and fell in love with the child's other parent. HIMYM kept audiences guessing for 9 seasons, and it's becoming clear that the spin-off could follow that example.
Sophie has taken a different approach to telling her son how she met his father by revealing that she met the mystery man in the first episode. This means that audiences have been keeping track of all the men that could potentially end up being the father, and the list has grown episode by episode.
So far, Jesse is the obvious choice, as he seems to be the How I Met Your Father counterpart to HIMYM's Robin. The two had been flirting since they met in Jesse's cab, and audiences were at the edge of their seat to see if the season 1 finale would end with the two in a happy relationship. However, it seems that the timing was not quite right.
While things haven't worked out for them so far, it is still very possible that Jesse will end up being the dad. The two have an obvious attraction, and no one expects Jesse's relationship with his ex, Meredith, to be endgame. More than likely, season 2 will see Jesse and Sophie each in their own relationships, but the show has probably not seen the last of their love game.
Sophie was devastated when Ian had to move away, thus ending their opportunity to get to know each other. However, now that he is back, Ian is again in the running. However, HIMYM writers loved their twists and turns, and How I Met Your Father is slowly showing that it is following that same formula, so Ian being the father feels like it might just be too easy, not to mention that Sophie makes it clear that she dates many more guys before ending up with the dad.
Regardless, it's clear that he will play a big role in at least season 2, if not for the entire series. The chemistry between Sophie and Ian is palpable, arguably more so than it ever was with Jesse, so this relationship is bound to be an interesting one.
While Charlie is one of the funniest characters on How I Met Your Father, he and Sophie have hardly begun to develop much of a friendship. The two have had very little in common other than their love for Valentina, so there hasn't been much of a chance for them to connect. However, if audiences have learned anything from the surprising relationship between Barney and Robin in HIMYM, it is to expect anything.
Now that Charlie and Valentina have split, it is unclear what Charlie will choose to do next. He has developed a close friendship with members of the gang, especially Ellen, so it can be assumed that he will stick around. Sophie did meet Charlie in the first episode, so it is still possible that a twist relationship will develop. Even if that doesn't result in Sophie's son, it would make for an interesting storyline with the conflict that could develop between Sophie and Valentina.
Sid and Sophie have playful banter down, but no romantic relationship has ever been hinted at between the two. Sophie met Sid at the same time she met Jesse, however, so he is still technically in the running as the father. He is arguably one of the most intelligent characters on How I Met Your Father and is very likable, so he wouldn't be a bad choice for Sophie.
Sid has been in a long-term relationship with Hannah for the duration of the first season, and while audiences expected the two to break up in the finale, they ended up getting married instead. There isn't much confidence in this romance though, seeing as the two were in disagreement just before tying the knot, so Sid still seems to be far from off the table. While this option is still unlikely, audiences can never be too sure.
Drew can be considered Sophie's first real relationship. He is sweet, if not a little pretentious. He did not seem to fully understand Sophie's artistic lifestyle, which led her to end the relationship. However, people can grow and change, and there is always a chance that audiences have not seen the last of Drew.
While being Sophie's first romance would normally disqualify him from being the father, the fact that they were never "in love" and that things ended quickly would provide just enough shock factor if he ended up being the father, so the possibility is still there.
While it appeared the show had greatly limited the number of possibilities for who the father could be, that quickly changed when Drew was revealed to have been at the engagement party, but not actually shown in the first episode. Therefore, the show can still bring out brand new characters and reveal that they were at the party, similarly to how How I Met Your Mother announced certain new characters were at important events.
There were a great many people at the bar the day of the engagement party, and Sophie is not shown on screen for every moment of it, so it is unclear just how many men Sophie met at Sid's bar. Therefore, any of the innumerable men at the party could end up being "the one" for Sophie.
On the day that Sophie says that she met her son's father, she went to the airport to tell Ian that she wanted to try a long-distance relationship. While audiences only see a small portion of the airport, it is possible that Sophie briefly met a man somewhere in the process of her mission.
Perhaps the father will end up being a TSA agent, a security guard, a traveler, or any other type of person that someone might find in an airport. The possibilities are truly limitless, once again showing that the show writers in no way limited the options with their reveal of when Sophie meets her son's father.
Just like how Sophie could have met her future love in the bar or airport, audiences know that this sitcom takes place in New York, therefore the characters spend plenty of time walking the streets. Just like how Ted revealed in HIMYM that the mother had been at the same club as him on St. Patrick's Day, and the Economics class that he accidentally crashed, the writers may at some point narrow down exactly where Sophie met the father that day.
Between her date, the bar, the airport, and the Brooklyn Bridge, Sophie had to have been on New York's sidewalks a great number of times. She could have quickly bumped shoulders with a future paramour, or even bought a bagel from him at a kiosk. While audiences can make an infinite number of guesses, they may just have to hold tight for more clues in seasons to come.
