Matthew McConaughey Campaigns For Magic Mike 3 Role With Throwback Photo
Matthew McConaughey begins a new kind of campaign as he takes to Instagram to ask for a Magic Mike 3 role with a throwback photo from the first film. McConaughey starred in the original Magic Mike as Dallas, a former stripper who owns the club the titular character works at and dreams of creating an empire of strip clubs. Despite his seemingly supportive persona, McConaughey's Dallas is eventually revealed to be disloyal to Mike and the other dancers and only driven by his ambition and greed.
Magic Mike, loosely based on Tatum's own experiences as a stripper in Tampa, Florida in his younger years, was a critical and commercial hit upon its release, grossing over $167 million against its $7 million and spawning a multimedia franchise that included a 2015 theatrical sequel, HBO Max competition reality series and United Kingdom stage production. After on-and-off talks for years about possibly returning to the fold, Tatum and original director Steven Soderbergh confirmed in late 2021 that Magic Mike 3 was officially getting made. Entitled Magic Mike's Last Dance, it's unknown what other franchise vets are set to return for the threequel, though one is already making it known he's ready to come back for more.
As development continues on the threequel, Matthew McConaughey took to Instagram to campaign for a Magic Mike 3 role. The star shared a throwback photo of him and franchise producer/star Channing Tatum from the set of the original film, tagging Tatum and asking for him to call him. This isn't the first time McConaughey expressed his interest to return for Magic Mike 3, with the Oscar winner stating in February he would be interested in reading the script for the threequel and determining from there his possible return, simiarly asking Tatum to call him. McConaughey's Dallas was notably absent from the 2015 sequel Magic Mike XXL, with the titular character initially believing he had died before learning he took off to Macau with Alex Pettyfer's Adam to start a new show. While plot details for Magic Mike's Last Dance are currently unknown, the film is being described as a closer to the franchise, which would make McConaughey's return in some capacity a fitting inclusion.
McConaughey isn't the only one currently campaigning for a Magic Mike 3 role with Channing Tatum. Danny McBride recently expressed his interest to reunite with his This is The End co-star for the upcoming threequel, even pitching the potential for him to star as a DJ for any of the film's dance sequences if not a bigger role. While audiences await further word on Magic Mike 3's development, they can catch up with the first two films streaming on HBO Max now.
