8 Burning Questions We Still Have After The How I Met Your Father Season Finale
The How I Met Your Father finale didn’t disappoint in providing several hooks for fans to be roped in to watch the second season. The sitcom’s premise of Sophie meeting her future spouse has an instant appeal that’s hard to resist, especially since her friend group is also interesting enough to follow.
The last episode of the first season had everything from a surprise cameo from a major How I Met Your Mother character to big-time breakups within Sophie’s group. With several other things also happening, there are more than a few questions that remain unanswered. They’re meant to keep fans guessing until the next season premiere, but it’s better to recap them all before new episodes arrive.
The climax of the season saw Sophie freak out about her new relationship with Jesse, which wasn’t clarified as a breakup. When Sophie returned to reconcile with Jesse, she found him kissing Meredith, causing her to leave and assume he had gotten back together with her.
However, it’s very likely that it could have been a goodbye kiss that Sophie didn’t realize. The show has proven previously that different perspectives tell another story entirely, so it’s currently up in the air whether Jesse and Meredith are a couple again.
The Captain isn’t exactly the most intelligent How I Met Your Father character, since he had an affair while his wife was still in the house. It did lead to Ian’s return to the city, as Becky refused to leave the Australian ship mission that The Captain had commissioned and terminated it.
Their divorce proceedings are clearly far from over and Sophie didn’t confirm that The Captain and Becky’s part is done as of yet. Given that The Captain is a fan favorite, there’s a good chance he might return. The question remains regarding what capacity he and Becky might be featured in the future though.
Sid and Hannah dropped the bombshell of their marriage to the gang right near the end of the season. It was a massive surprise since they were last seen in a big argument about getting married in the first place.
Although the couple claimed they married quickly because a wedding was too expensive, their quarrel was actually about the distance and Sid’s inability to compromise. There’s more to this big decision than they’ve admitted to, and fans will have to wait until the next season to learn the real answer.
The biggest connection between HIMYM and HIMYF arrived in the form of Robin, who struck up a conversation with Sophie at MacLaren’s Bar. This meeting took place in 2022, which is two years after Robin seemingly reconciled with her friends, as seen in the original show’s finale.
Robin was clearly there on her own and contemplating things before Sophie walked in, but it wouldn’t have been that way in the older days when she had friends to spend her free time with. It begs the question if Robin and the rest of the gang are still as distant as the finale showed, or if none of them were simply available at the time.
Due to the backlash surrounding the much-maligned series finale, the original show had an alternate ending in its home media. Some fans have argued that HIMYF is better than HIMYM since, unlike the parent series, it guaranteed the identity of the future spouse early on.
After all, Robin told Sophie that timing was the issue for the failure of her relationship, and that’s exactly what she said about Barney in the seventh season of the original show. However, since the broadcast ending showed her getting together with Ted in 2030, it’s questionable as to which man she was referring to.
There were several clues and hints toward the likes of Ian, Drew, and Jesse being the future spouse of Sophie in the first season. Sid and Charlie were also included in this line-up in the premiere, since Sophie mentioned she met the father the night the episode was set.
As far as the season progressed, there was nothing to suggest that either Charlie or Sid had any interest in Sophie and vice versa. This should lead to fans questioning how the two men can qualify as candidates anymore and what course the series will take in the next season for the pair to have a potential romance with Sophie.
Ian can’t really be considered one of the best How I Met Your Father characters because he only showed up in the first and last episodes for a few brief scenes. The finale revealed that Becky’s denial of keeping the ship Ian was working on at sea brought him back to the city.
What it didn’t reveal was how Ian tracked Sophie down, since the pair had ceased communication after the premiere. Ian also didn’t know about Sophie’s gallery, because it only became possible after he had left. He may have kept track of Sophie through different means, but viewers are left wondering what way he used to meet her again.
Unlike the group in How I Met Your Mother, Sophie’s social circle is relatively new and the majority of the people weren’t friends months ago. By the end of the season, Sophie and Jesse had hooked up and separated, while Valentina and Charlie also broke up.
It’s unknown how the friends will operate now that Sophie and Valentina - who are clearly the core members of the group - have had major breakups within the circle. It’s possibly going to be the biggest question mark until the next season starts, which has quite the task of justifying these characters remaining in contact.
