The 10 Marvel Comic Book Plot Twists, According To Reddit
Throughout the history of Marvel's publication, many writers have been responsible for creating some of the best and worst plot twists in comic books. From Mephisto's diabolical plans to the unexpected impacts of a super-couple, Marvel has been able to keep readers engaged over the years.
And these same fans and readers of the Marvel comic books have expressed their opinions on Reddit, some of which even spawned huge comment sections. Whether these are considered the best or worst, these are some of Redditors' discussed and shared plot twists.
Reddit user Landon1195 shared a link to Mephisto's plan during the Spider-Man One More Day arc written by Nick Spencer. It was revealed that Mephisto tried to erase Peter Parker's future daughter from existence after seeing a vision of his defeat in Hell by her hands.
Among the comment sections, yer1 expressed their thoughts on this reveal, saying that they "don't hate the revelation." But they do express that they would have "probably handled it different than Spencer."
After Robert Downey Jr's brilliant portrayal of the iconic hero, it's hard to think of an evil version of Tony Stark existing in the multiverse. But one does in the form of Superior Iron Man after his moral compass is reversed by a botched spell.
But the twist itself was the launch of his app Extremis 3.0 being a secret virus that infected the user, unaware of his villainous turn by Pepper Potts. As killerz7770 points out, this Tony Stark is a "twisted evil genius."
Introduced in the New X-Men Annual`#2001, Xorn was introduced as a powerful mutant who was saved by the X-Men from being sold. After his rescue, he joined the team and became a respected teacher at Xavier's school.
But when Grant Morrison revealed that the man behind the mask was Magneto, some were left speechless. Among the comment section of baronzemo's post, daninrl thought that for "him to be Magneto infiltrating the X-men and 'healing' Xavier, etc, was very fun." Although this arc has also been seen by Reddit as an unpopular Magneto comic book story.
"Omg, that plot twist!" That is all that needs to be said to sum up AlisstarSupes' reaction to this one page of this grand reveal.
Originally, the Skrull soldier was sent to Earth to learn about the Fantastic Four's weakness while shapeshifting into a friendly human, but she ended up falling in love with Johnny Storm. In one page alone, she breaks up with him and she is revealed to be controlled by Alicia Masters, The Thing's wife.
With seventy years worth of Spider-Man comics to use for inspiration, the movies won't be running out of material anytime soon. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, it looked as though it was inspired by "a twist from Marvel Comics," according to PolyShaun.
Another twist from the One More Day arc, MJ makes a deal with Mephisto for everyone to forget Peter Parker is Spider-Man to save Aunt May. And with the cost of their daughter's existence, Mephisto surely didn't pull any punches with the web-slinger's life.
On the last page of Captain America: Steve Rogers #1, the iconic Avenger uttered the words "Hail Hydra," sparking a huge online reaction and creating the best Captain America memes. As the story progressed, it was revealed that this was an alternative timeline where Rogers became an agent for Hydra.
While some expressed their upset opinions online from the initial twist, [deleted] couldn't quite understand "why everyone is upset about it?'' But at least his reign of terror on the pages didn't last too long.
Back in the 90s, X-Men had a run of comics named Fatal Attractions that shared a similar art style to the popular animated series the team had on television at the time. And as vincentsong points out, "It was simple, packed with twists, and made a lot of impact."
While the series had many twists throughout its run, non were as disturbing as when the artist drew a large spread of Magneto pulling the Adamantium out of Wolverine, one of the prominent characters who use it, as the X-Men watched helplessly. Never have readers seen Logan in such twisted pain, but it showed just how far Magneto was willing to go in this run.
"His wife left him!" That all needs to be said from thebustman to know that fans of the Fantastic Four will not be reading about their usual super-powered family, although it might be something comic book fans know about Mister Fantastic's romance.
Fantastic Four: Life Story was a retelling of the Fantastic Four throughout the years, with the second installment exploring their chemistry at the end of the 1970s after Sue left Reed Richards. The early twist sets up the rest of the run's family dynamic and sees The Thing and Richards even living together after his break up.
As Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 introduced everyone to an evil version of the hero, it developed into the Secret Empire comic run. And even if things looked bleak for the heroes, Captain America from the mainline universe jumped in to save the day.
But during the second issue for Secret Empire, mainline Rogers' appearance was initially a twist in itself that left readers more questions. Cafeterialoca stated that they thought the writer "is playing one bigger twist on people." Those who haven't read this series yet will just have to wait and see if there was.
One of the latest Marvel characters introduced in the comics, Tosin Oduye is not unlike any other Wakandian defender. While T'Challa (aka Black Panther) uses Vibranium for advanced technology, Oduye's tribe implements it onto their skin to gain some powerful abilities.
And it looks like his introduction has been praised, especially by Reddit user rikitikifemi. "The latest BP introduces a nice plot twist and new defender of Wakanda." What the writers and creators behind the character have in store for his new fans, only time will tell.
