March Madness: Only 14 perfect Yahoo brackets remain after Day 1

0

Did No. 15 seed St. Peters ruin your hopes of a perfect men's tournament bracket? You weren't alone.

After a day of March Madness, only 14 perfect brackets remain in Yahoo Tourney Pick'Em.

By far the biggest bracket-buster was St. Peter's, the small school from Jersey City, New Jersey that took down college basketball juggernaut Kentucky, a No. 2 seed, in an 85-79 thriller. To get a sense of the scale of upset we're dealing with here, consider that Kentucky head coach John Calipari's salary is more than five times larger than the entire St. Peter's basketball budget.

A full 98.2% of brackets had Kentucky advancing to the second round, where St. Peter's will now face No. 7 seed Murray State. Some brackets were more affected than others, as 60.2% had the Wildcats reaching the Elite Eight and 39.1% had them going to the Final Four.

St. Peter's wasn't the only nascent Cinderella to emerge Thursday and ruin some brackets in the process. No. 12 seed Richmond took down No. 5 seed Iowa, a trendy sleeper pick after the Hawkeyes captured a surprise Big Ten tournament title, while New Mexico State provided another 12-5 upset at UConn's expense.

The bracket carnage could have been worse had No. 1 overall seed Gonzaga not survived a scare against Georgia State, who fought for a 54-54 tie with 13 minutes remaining before the Bulldogs steamrolled their way to victory. (And hilarious betting intrigue in the end.)
