Artist Jae Lee Returns to Image Comics in New Series Seven Sons
Warning: contains preview images for Seven Sons #1!
Superstar artist Jae Lee returns to Image Comics with the new series Seven Sons. Co-written by Robert Windom and Kelvin Mao, the seven-issue miniseries will be Lee’s first creator-owned project for the publisher since 1994’s Hellshock. The series follows the adventures of a young man who may be the second coming of Jesus; the first issue goes on sale in print and digital June 15.
Jae Lee has a distinct style all his own, one that set him apart from his contemporaries. Jae Lee broke into the American comics industry in 1991, illustrating an eight-part Beast story for Marvel Comics Presents. From there, he took over penciling Namor the Sub-Mariner as well as X-Factor. These two titles helped turn Jae Lee into a superstar, and as with most artists at that time, found his way to Image Comics, illustrating various Youngblood and WildCats titles. In 1994, he launched the creator-owned Hellshock with Image; the series would run through two volumes over the next few years. After the book completed its run, Lee returned to Marvel, illustrating the various Dark Tower mini-series, as well as providing numerous covers for a variety of publishers. Now, 28 years after Hellshock’s debut, Jae Lee returns to Image Comics, illustrating the new Biblical thriller Seven Sons.
A press release on Image Comics’ website gives fans a first look at both the series’ premise as well as Lee’s gorgeous covers and interior art, shared below. Seven Sons’ protagonist is Delph, a young man who may be the second coming of Christ. Delph goes on the run, seeking to learn more about who he is—as well as his destiny. Co-writer Windom said he and Kelvin wanted to explore the “impact of religion in society” in a most unique way—with “murder, mystery, romance and even a missile attack or two” Windom went on to praise Jae Lee’s art, calling Lee the “perfect artist” for bringing the book to life. The preview art shows a decidedly different version of 1998 than readers remember, a world where Las Vegas has been rechristened “New Canaan,” and a world anxiously awaits the rebirth of the Son of God.
Over the course of a 30-year career, Jae Lee has remained one of the most exciting artists working in North American comics. His style was nothing like the norm for superhero comics; it made him unique then and has helped him remain relevant today. His work over the last several years has been mostly covers for Marvel and DC but now he is set to return with a new creator-owned title, his first for the publisher in 28 years. The preview pages instantly teleport readers to New Canaan, where a new messiah is about to be born—but clearly something is rotten under the surface. Lee’s art not only shows readers the majesty, the pomp and circumstance surrounding Delph’s birth, but also the menace lurking underneath it all.
Superstar artist Jae Lee made a name for himself in the 1990s with gorgeous pencils and unforgettable covers, and now he is returning to Image Comics with Seven Sons, his first creator-owned book for the publisher since 1994.
