Marvel's Clark Gregg Has Funny Response To One Character In The Batman

0

Clark Gregg, who plays Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has a funny response to a similarly named character in Warner Bros./DC Films’ The Batman. Writer and director Matt Reeves’ reboot was released in theaters earlier this month and appears to be the beginning of a Batverse, with spinoffs coming to HBO Max. Inspired by Frank Miller’s seminal comic Batman: Year One, the film explores Bruce Wayne’s (Robert Pattinson) second year as Batman. The Batman pits its titular character against several villains from DC’s rogues’ galley, including John Turturro's Carmine Falcone, Colin Farrell’s Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot, and Paul Dano’s Edward Nashton/The Riddler.

The Riddler serves as The Batman’s main villain, a Zodiac-esque serial killer leaving clues for the “World’s Greatest Detective” as he targets Gotham City’s corrupt elites. One of these so-called elites is Peter Sarsgaard’s Gil Colson, the district attorney who works for mob boss Carmine Falcone. People were quick to notice that Gil Colson sounds an awful lot like Phil Coulson, and the actor who plays the latter is one of them.

Clark Gregg, who tends to stay up to date with things Marvel and DC-related, recently took to Twitter after seeing The Batman. His post asked the film’s writers a simple question about Sarsgaard’s character: "Gil Colson?" Fans commented on the post with similar reactions, saying things like "I hear Colson is coming back in The Batman 2: 2Phil2Coulson.” Check it out below:

Gregg first appeared as SHIELD Agent Coulson in 2008’s Iron Man, which simultaneously birthed the MCU. Of course, Coulson was tragically killed at the hands of Tom Hiddleston's Loki in The Avengers (2012), motivating the heroes to unite and avenge him. Gregg went on to play the character in seven seasons of ABC’s Agents of SHIELD, which resurrected Coulson. However, Disney+’s Loki has seemingly confirmed Coulson stayed dead in the Sacred Timeline. Gregg continues to voice variant versions of Coulson in Disney+’s What If…? animated series and has said he’s always open to reprising his role in live-action.

This week, Gregg also used social media to commemorate Agents of SHIELD’s Disney+ debut alongside Netflix's Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders. Characters like Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin have already appeared in MCU projects like Hawkeye and Spider-Man: No Way Home. While this doesn’t necessarily mean any of Agents of SHIELD characters will appear in the larger MCU, the universe’s ever-evolving nature makes variants of any character a possibility. Still, The Batman's Gil Colson is almost certainly not a variant of Phil Coulson.
