So far, the HIMYM spin-off series How I Met Your Father is following its predecessor's example. After finally hooking up, a sleeping Jesse confesses to Sophie that he loves her. The admission was surprising itself, but the small similarity to the parent show really stood out to viewers.
While he may not have been a central character in HIMYM, the Captain and his wife, Becky, were a welcome sight to fans of the original show. While it was unclear at first how they would tie into the rest of the plot, the two supporting characters ended up being very cleverly woven in.
Redditors like 05110909 were surprised and intrigued to see the intimidating Captian and of course, "Boats, Boats, Boats!" Becky. Not only did the couple end up affecting Sophie's love life, but they paved the way for the cameo that ended up stealing the show.
When Sophie leaves a heartbroken Jesse at his apartment, she steps into a nearby bar to think things through. Audiences were beyond excited when that bar happened to be MacLaren's pub, still tended by HIMYM's favorite bartender, Carl. But this wasn't the biggest cameo of the episode.
"I gasped when Robin was at the bar!" said Redditor thecadillaclawyer17. While fans had been waiting for a glimpse of a core HIMYM character, they were unsure if it would end up happening. However, Robin was a very welcome surprise and a promise that How I Met Your Father will have more similarities to How I Met Your Mother.
After her inspirational talk with Robin, Sophie headed back up to Jesse's apartment ready to apologize and try again. When she gets there, however, she finds him kissing his ex, Meredith.
Redditors had been riding on the high of seeing Robin, so they were not expecting this unfortunate turn in the relationship of Sophie and Jesse, with user Twiztedblue saying "noooo Jesse we were cheering for you!" Only time will tell what will end up happening between Jesse and Meredith, but audiences predict that season 2 of How I Met Your Father will tell Jesse's side of the big kiss.
Charlie and Valentina are introduced to audiences as they are first entering into their relationship. The season saw them work through various emotions and doubts, but it seemed to audiences that they were finally figuring out how to make things work.
However, the last couple of episodes showed the two reach an impasse about their wants for their future, ultimately leading them to break up. The surprise conclusion to their relationship has many viewers of the How I Met Your Father season finale left with some burning questions about whether the breakup is permanent.
Ellen's new job at the end of season 1 had audiences excited for her next steps in her life, however, there was something surprising about the name of her new employer.
Goliath Corporation is suspiciously similar to Goliath National Bank, the huge company that all three men from HIMYM worked for, and for whom Ted designed his first major skyscraper. Redditor Nobody0597 noticed this surprise mention of the company and wondered if any of the characters might "still [work] at Goliath Bank in 2022." At the very least, Ellen may end up working in the building that Ted designed.
When HIMYM concluded, fans had to accept that they would never get the answer to some of the show's most burning mysteries, but apparently, they were wrong.
Redditor B0yWh0Lived was pleasantly surprised to find that How I Met Your Father had solved one of its older mysteries: "The answer to the Pineapple Incident!" In the scene with The Captain, he suddenly exclaimed that he had once had a Pineapple stolen off his front porch: finally explaining where a drunken Ted had found his Pineapple.
Hannah and Sid have been in a long-distance relationship for the duration of the show's first season, and audiences were not confident that they would be able to make it work. Between their physical separation, the expense of their wedding, and the troubles with communication, they have not seemed like the most promising couple.
