Pittsburg officer shoots man after police say he fired rifle ‘toward’ officers
PITTSBURG — A Pittsburg officer armed with a service rifle shot and wounded a man who allegedly fired a rifle towards officers who were responded to a 911 call, police said in a news release.
The 29-year-old man, who has not been named publicly, was treated at a hospital and is expected to survive.
It all started around 11:30 p.m. Friday, when police were called to a home on the 1300 block of Redwood Street in Pittsburg, by a woman who reported her son was firing a rifle outside their home. The responding officers were able to get her and her husband out of the home without the son noticing, according to a Pittsburg police news release.
Authorities then pulled up in front of the home inside a “ballistically armored transport” and tried to convince the man to come outside. The man exited, rifle in hands, and “fired toward” officers in the transport, the police news release says.
An officer shot the 29-year-old man with a service rifle, and he retreated back into the house, called 911, and told the dispatcher he’d been shot. The dispatcher told him to go outside and surrender, and he did, authorities said.
Police say the man was treated for a gunshot wound to his chest. They have not named the officer who shot him, nor said whether the officer has been involved in any prior shootings.
The Contra Costa District Attorney will conduct an investigation into the incident, authorities said.
