[Baseball] Saints Split Doubleheader Against Comets

Sioux City, IA - The Presentation College Saints split their doubleheader against the Mayville Comets, winning game one 9-5 before falling in game two 14-2. The split day improves the Saints record to 3-22.

Game One 

The Saints got the scoring started in game one, putting two on the board in the second. Both of those runs scored on a Tomas Frutos (Sophomore / Santa Paula, CA) single. The Saints would then add three more in the fifth, one on a Matthew Womack (Sophomore / Houston, TX) single, and then two more on a Mathias Gonzalez (Sophomore / Guayaquil, Ecuador) double. The Comets then answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth. The Saints got both of those runs back in the seventh after a bases loaded walk by Simon Virostek (Freshman / Enchant, Alberta, Canada), and a sacrifice fly from RJ Galvez (Sophomore / Harris, MN). Gonzalez then added two more runs in the eighth on a single, bring his total on the day to four RBI. Along with Gonzalez, Frutos and Tyus Stanley (Junior / Federal Way, WA) each had two hits for the Saints. The Comets would put up three runs in the ninth, but it was not enough, as the Saints would get the 9-5 victory.

The Saints sent Francisco Avena (Junior / Pico Rivera, CA) to the mound, and he pitched 6.1 innings and allowed only five hits and two runs, one of which was earned. He struck out six, compared to just one walk, while picking up the win. He was relieved by Tynan Preece (Sophomore / Spanaway, WA), who went 1.2 innings, allowing no hits or runs. He struck out one, and walked two. The final pitcher of the game was Ryan Powers (Freshman / Rock Springs, WY). He pitched one inning, and allowed two hits, and three earned runs. Powers struck out one, and walked one. 

Game Two

Game two saw the Comets get out to the early lead, scoring one run in th ebottom half of the first. The Saints would grab the lead in the third after a Frutos two RBI single. The Comets would come right back in the bottom half of the inning to score two, and retake a 3-2 lead. Mayville opened the game up in the fifth, scoring 10 runs. They would add one more run in the sixth. Virostek was the only batter for the Saints with multiple hits in the game.

Starting for the Saints was Michael Wishowski (Freshman / Fairplay, Co), and he went 3.1 innings, allowing just three hits and three runs, two of which were earned. He walked five, and struck out three. Wishowski would be handed the loss. He was relieved by Samuel Garner (Sophomore / Arvada, CO), who pitched 1.1 innings, during which he allowed seven hits and 10 runs, seven of which were earned. The final pitcher of the day for the Saints was Blake Smith (Sophomore / Minot, ND), and he would go 1.1 innings, allowing a hit and an unearned run.

Up Next: The Saints will travel to Mitchell, SD for a midweek doubleheader against Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday, March 22. Those games will start 5pm.
