Memorial Cup hosts prevail at home
Maxim Barbashev and Brooklyn Kalmikov scored for the Wildcats in a 6-2 loss to the Saint John Sea Dogs, Saturday at TD Station.
The Sea Dogs opened the scoring with a power play goal nearly four minutes into the first period and made it a 2-0 game about four minutes later.
Barbashev got Moncton on the board with a 5-on-3 power play goal with under eight minutes left in the period. The Russian winger took a pass from Kalmikov pass and whistled a wrist shot under the blocker of goaltender Thomas Couture to cut Moncton's deficit to 2-1.
Saint John restored a two-goal lead three minutes later.
Kalmikov got the Wildcats back to within one with under two minutes to go in the period after taking a cross-crease pass from Vincent Labelle and burying a shot past a helpless Couture.
Moncton trailed 3-2 after twenty minutes.
It stayed a one-goal game until the home side added to its lead with about four minutes remaining in the second period.
Saint John added two more goals late in the third to create a 6-2 final score.
Goalie Jonathan Lemieux made 34 saves in the Wildcats' net. Kalmikov finished the game with a goal and an assist.
