The Houthis (Ansar Allah) have claimed responsibility for a recent large-scale attack with missiles and drones on Saudi Arabia.

The attack, which began late on March 19 and ended in the early hours of March 20, targeted key facilities in Saudi Arabia’s southern and western regions, including al-Shuqaiq water desalination plant, an oil facility of Aramco in Jizan, Dhahran power plant, Khamis Mushait gas facility and Armaco’s gas liquidation factory in Yanbu.

Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari, a spokesman for the Houthis, said in a statement that the Saudi facilities were targeted with suicide drones as well as cruise and ballistic missiles on two phases.

The large-scale attack, which was carried out in response to the Saudi-led coalition’s strict blockade on Yemen, was codenamed “Operation Breaking the Siege 2”.

“The Yemeni Armed Forces are will, with the help of God Almighty, carry out qualitative military operations to break the unjust siege” Brig. Gen. Sari warned. “The armed forces warn the criminal enemy of the consequences of the continued brutal siege on its facilities and economic projects.”

Saudi Arabia acknowledged that the Houthi attack resulted in material losses. However, the Kingdom didn’t report any casualties.

From its side, the Saudi-led coalition alleged that its air-defense means intercepted eight suicide drones and a ballistic missile.

In a statement shared by the Saudi Press Agency, the coalition said that the large-scale attack was the Houthis’ response to the new Saudi-led peace initiative for Yemen. The Kingdom was hoping to hold direct talks with the Yemeni group before the end of March.

“The Houthis’ escalation of hostile attacks is a rejection of peace efforts and initiatives,” the statement reads.

Between March 9 and 10, the Houthis carried out a similar attack on Saudi Arabia. The large-scale attack, codenamed “Operation Breaking the Siege 1,” targeted Aramco’s oil refinery in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and other facilities of the oil giant in the cities of Jizan and Abha.

The Saudi-led coalition will likely respond to the Operation Breaking the Siege 2 by resuming its airstrikes on Houthi-held areas in Yemen. The large-scale attack may have killed the Saudi-led peace initiative.
