WFP: Ukraine conflicts may lead to hike in prices of food in Afghanistan
United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has warned that the ongoing conflicts between Russia and Ukraine will cause a hike in the prices of food items and fuels in Afghanistan.
Spokesperson of the program Shelley Thakral on Friday, March 19, 2022, warned that the budget allocated for addressing Afghanistan’s crisis is on the verge of finishing.
WFP has provided life-saving assistance for 12 million Afghans since the beginning of 2022 but the has added that 95 percent of 38 million Afghans do not have access to sufficient food.
The spokesperson has said that WFP has so far spent $2 billion for providing food in Afghanistan and added that they need another $1.6 billion to continue the assistance.
She further added that Afghanistan has not fully been forgotten by the donor countries but the crisis of 3.2 million Ukrainian refugees and the attacks of Russia on Ukraine has made Europe much busier.
Earlier, Commissioner of UNHCR Filippo Grandi had said that the Ukraine crisis may deviate assistance from Afghanistan and that the hike in prices will hinder efforts for addressing the humanitarian crisis.
