Maurice Richard Povich, 83, was born on January 17, 1939, to a Jewish family in Washington, D.C.
In 1962, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in television journalism.
His career initially began as a radio reporter at WWDC.
Povich gained national fame as the host of the TV show A Current Affair, in the late 1980s.
In 1991 he co-produced his own show, The Maury Povich Show.
In a 2021 virtual interview with KTLA, Povich told the outlet that, “with The Maury Povich Show staring in ’91 and the Maury Show starting in ’98, you know, add it all up, it’s 31 years.”
And when he was told that he was the longest-running daytime talk-show host in TV history, he said, “Well I don’t know if I’d like to wear that,” Povich shared with a laugh.
When KTLA’s Doug Kolk asked Povich what he thinks makes his show so appealing to viewers, he replied with:
“I think you have to change with the times… There is a thread – and the thread is storytelling – I’ve always believed, Doug, that it’s about storytelling…each individual story has it’s unique quality.”
