Kim's Convenience Cast: Where Are They Now? | Screen Rant

0

It's always a shame to see a fan-favorite TV show get canceled before its time. One recent example is the hit Canadian sitcom Kim's Convenience, a supremely relatable and easy to watch examination of a family doing their best to survive the day-to-day grind. On the positive side, when one door closes, another tends to open a world of opportunity.

Indeed, now that the primary actors in Kim's Convenience have wrapped up their 5-season and 65-episode run, several of them have gone on to much bigger and better things, including Disney, the MCU, and other mega-popular movie and TV projects.

As the lead protagonist and loving father figure, it's no surprise that Paul Sun-Hyung Lee is being courted for big Hollywood productions. After wrapping Kim's Convenience in 2021, Lee appeared as the Devil in one episode of TallBoyz. However, it's his appearance as Captain Carson Teva in the Disney+ original series The Book of Boba Fett that really got fans excited.

Moving forward, Lee is set to star in Netflix's live-action adaptation of the mega-popular Avatar: The Last Airbender. He will portray Uncle Iroh, Zuko's avuncular mentor and retired Fire Nation general who helps the boy on his quest.

For such a strong character on the surprisingly Canadian show, it's a bit of a shame that Jean Yoon hasn't been afforded more opportunities since its ending. Perhaps she wanted to take a break after a grueling TV schedule, but right now, Yoon doesn't seem to have many projects lined up for 2022 and beyond.

However, Yoon did appear on one episode of Nurses in 2021 and played Dr. Sato in the 2021 film Voyeurs for Amazon Prime. Yoon did tell NOW that she is a "mom who acts," so perhaps Yoon is currently spending some well-deserved time with her family.

Fans of the show may have heard of a little movie called Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, in which Simu Liu plays a radically different character than he does in the sitcom. Indeed, the biggest breakout star of the show has ascended to the A-list, having four feature films currently in post.

Liu is set to star in Greta Gerwig's Barbie, a sci-fi thriller called Hello Stranger, and a Mark Wahlberg dog movie called Arthur the King. While details on his roles in those films are unknown, Liu will also star in the rom-com One True Loves, in which he plays a man named Sam caught in a love triangle.

Andrea Bang was fortunate enough to portray Janet Kim while also making several projects concurrently. For instance, she joined the cast of A Million Little Things in 2021, playing the role of Claudia over an 8-episode arc. More recently, Andrea starred opposite Sebastian Stan in the cannibal horror-comedy Fresh, playing the role of Penny.

However, Andrea is reuniting with Kim's Convenience director Renuka Jeyapalan for her sophomore feature Stay the Night, in which she'll star as a woman named Grace who has a life-changing one-night stand. While details are murkier, Andrea is also poised to star in a romance film called Float opposite Robbie Amell, as well as a thriller called Dear David opposite Justin Long.

So far, the only main character to remain in the realm of sitcom TV is Andrew Phung, AKA the hilarious Kimchee. Phung now headlines his own CBC sitcom called Run the Burbs, which follows a Vietnamese-Canadian family doing their best to survive the suburbs.

Phung not only stars but also co-created the show in a personal semiautobiographical tale of his time growing up in Canada. For those yet to see his new show, it'll be a pleasure to see Andrew actually portray a character based on his own experiences and all the hilarious insights he has into his specific culture.

Jung's boss and girlfriend Shannon (Nicole Power) was one of the most delightful characters in Kim's Convenience. She appears to have a shrewd agent as well, because Power booked a new TV gig just as her current one was concluding. Better yet, fans may not know it's an official Kim's Convenience spinoff show entitled Strays.

Power reprises her role as Shannon Ross, now the executive director of an animal shelter in Ontario. Hilarity and hijinks ensue as Shannon juggles her love of animals with the high-strung demands of the job. Power also took second billing in the underrated VH1 comedy Let's Get Merried in 2021, and is set to appear in the upcoming dramatic film Pattern, about a father raising a child after his partner dies.

Ben Beauchemin played Janet's best friend Gerald in 51 of 65 episodes in the iconic sitcom that was canceled too soon, making him quite a prominent figure. As such, it's sort of a shame that he's only logged one credit since his time on the show, although it's quite a solid one. Beauchemin played Owen in an episode of the HBO Max original series Titans.

Titans follows a crew of young superheroes who come of age as they save the world from power-starved enemies. He appeared in the antepenultimate episode of season 3, which aired 6 months after Kim's Convenience's finale.

Michael Musi played Terence on the show, the nerdy storeroom manager who was often the butt of many jokes at Handy Rental Cars. A minor character who grew into a popular mainstay that appeared in 47 episodes, Terence got stronger as the show went on.

Alas, Musi has only booked one gig since ending his run on the sitcom. In 2021, he starred opposite Alison Pill in All My Puny Sorrows, a heavy emotional Canadian drama based on Miriam Toews's bestseller. Musi plays a minor character named Finbar in the film. Here's hoping Musi appears on either Strays or Run the Burbs with his Kim's Convenience brethren.
