Which Kim's Convenience Character Are You, Based On Your Zodiac?
Over the course of 5 seasons and 65 episodes, the main and supporting characters in the beloved sitcom Kim's Convenience were given the chance to show the full range of their distinct personalities. While much of the story follows the Kim family as they navigate personal and professional pursuits, side characters including store customers and Handy Car Rental employees also contribute greatly to the success of the show.
As the spinoff series Strays continues to follow the exploits of Shannon Ross (Nicole Power), now is a great time to entertain how viewers can relate the characters of Kim's Convenience through their own astrological traits and personality quirks.
While Appa (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) operates the titular convenience store more often than the others, it's his wife Umma (Jean Yoon) that really runs the show. As a natural-born leader, Umma makes key decisions on behalf of the family and the business alike. She does so with courage, confidence, and fiery passion, giving her the positive hallmarks of Aries and making her one of the best TV moms of the past decade.
Of course, like a well-rounded Aries, Umma can also be impatient and moody, such as when she tries to weigh in on Janet's love life and discipline Jung for his troubled past. Aries also make some of the best teachers of all zodiac signs, an occupation Umma held in Korea before immigrating to Canada.
Appa has all the bearings of a proud Taurus. He is loving and loyal to no end and will protect his family at whatever cost. However, he's also extremely bullish and steeped in outmoded societal traditions that he is unwilling to break from, causing major conflict with his wife and children.
Moreover, Taureans tend to be homebodies who dislike major life changes and love to wear the same clothes every day. Appa checks all three boxes, with a slight sartorial flannel variation occurring each day. As a fixed Earth sign, Appa remains grounded at all times and would much rather stay true to his nature than make big sweeping personality changes.
A great daughter one minute and a terrible one the next, Janet (Andrea Bang) has all the complicated polarity of a traditional Gemini. On the plus side, she's extremely smart, wildly outgoing, and as seen in her roommate situation with Gerald and Chelsea, is very adaptable. However, Janet can also be impulsive and ambivalent, which gets her trouble from time to time.
Janet's most glaring Gemini trait is her intellectual curiosity, unafraid to explore cutting-edge photography techniques and using her nature as a social butterfly to run a free after-school photography course for underprivileged kids.
Cancer is often listed among the most spiritual zodiac signs. On the iconic sitcom that was canceled too soon, Nina Gomez (Amanda Brugel) is Umma's friend from church who is promoted to Pastor during season 2. Between her religious role and inherently nurturing personality that councils Umma in times of need, Nina has almost all of the traits of the fourth zodiac sign.
The only real quality Nina lacks is a playful sense of humor found in most Cancer signs. Despite being serious at all times, Nina's compassion, sensitivity, and ability to protect herself and others from spiritual unrest reinforces her Cancerian characteristics.
As the undoubted Alpha male who proudly boasts about his physical dominance (those abs) and competitive drive, Jung (Simu Liu) is clearly a Leo. He's bold, supremely confident, fierce, and fearless in his pursuits, and he takes charge to lead his own life when things look grim.
Of course, like Taurus, Leo can be hard-headed at times, which Jung certainly demonstrates in his relationship with Appa, his disapproving father. In many ways, Jung and Appa are victims of their own intense pride, and like both the bull and mighty lion, do not want to back down and make concessions for anyone.
One of the most lovable return customers in the convenience store is Frank, the stoic, hard-working, industrious handyman who drones on and on with long-winded stories that annoy Appa to no end. Over time, Frank proves how reliable, responsible, and kind he is, making him a candidate for Virgo.
Also marked by his sharp, dry wit and ability to crack jokes without breaking a smile, Frank's humility and laconic self-deprecating sense of humor certainly align with that of Virgo.
Symbolized by the scales of justice, Libra is often concerned with fairness and attempting to please everyone around them. Coupled with their artistic sensibility, Gerald (Ben Beauchemin) perfectly fits the bill. He's a photography student who does his best to negotiate the awkward love triangle between him, Janet, and Chelsea. As such, Gerald would rather suffer personally to see them be happy, a sacrificial hallmark of Libra.
Due to his complex kinship with his roommates, Gerald expresses empathy and compassion every step of the way, using his extroverted Libran personality to bring all parties together as a harmonious unit.
Due to her mysterious nature and penchant for keeping secrets and acting clandestinely on the highly rewatchable sitcom, Chelsea would almost certainly be a Scorpio. She is brazen, compassionate, and used her creative side to sneak her way into becoming roommates with Janet and Gerald.
Scorpio is also hailed for its intense loyalty, which Chelsea certainly demonstrates in her time as Gerald's significant other. Also known for their brutal honesty, no character was quicker to confront their true feelings in relation to others than Chelsea.
As the hilarious, magnetic, and warm-hearted manager of Handy Rental Cars, Shannon has the lovably bossy nature of Sagittarius. She's intelligent, savvy, compassionate, and as seen in her spinoff show Strays, is a huge animal lover. Sagittarius, a half-human-half-horse, is often named among the biggest animal-loving zodiacs.
More than anything though, it's Shannon's extremely charismatic personality that draws people to her funny, extroverted sense of humor. Of course, being the boss means she must demonstrate impeccable decision-making, another Sagittarian trait.
Mr. Chin (John Ng) is an impeccable neat freak who frequents the store and voices his concern for cleanliness and organization. Since Capricorn is often named among the most fastidious zodiac signs, Mr. Chin certainly abides.
Capricorn is also known for being one the busiest hustlers and successful businessmen on the zodiac chart, something the entrepreneurial Mr. Chin proves by owning and operating several successful companies. The funniest thing about Mr. Chin is, despite how hard he works, he detests manual labor.
By far the smartest and nerdiest Handy Car Rentals employee (other than Shannon), Terence has the intellectual superiority of Aquarius. He uses his high-powered mind to solve a massive jigsaw puzzle at work, sidestep Kimchee's spicy food pranks, and know when Jung is angling for a promotion or time off.
Aside from his exceptional cleverness, Terence is also one of the most eccentric characters on the show, who despite being antagonized by Kimchee at work, remains optimistic like the best of Aquarians.
As his name suggests, Kimchee (Andrew Phung) loves food more than anything else in the world save for maybe video games. Pisces are not only named among the biggest foodies on the astrological chart, but they're also extremely gracious and emotionally in tune with those around them.
Kimchee has such qualities in spades. He was gracious enough to offer a room to Jung to live in at his lowest moment, and even felt so bad about hanging out with Appa behind Jung's back that he stopped doing so until he knew Jung was okay with it. If that's not emotionally sensitive, what is?
