Hogwarts Legacy: Everything We Know About Professor Fig
One of the most notable characters revealed in the Hogwarts Legacy State of Play trailer was Professor Figg. Described as accomplished yet enigmatic, Professor Figg works as part of the staff at the school of witchcraft and wizardry and appears to be one of the main character's most crucial companions. Though he is an original character to the game, there may be more to Professor Figg than meets the eye.
Professor Figg gets very little spotlight in Hogwarts Legacy's gameplay trailer, but whenever he is on the screen, much is suggested about him. Hogwarts Legacy's story seems to track one of the Goblin Rebellions that Harry Potter would come to study a century after the time the game takes place (1890, according to a newspaper clipping in the trailer). Professor Figg can be seen fending off the goblin antagonist Ranrock, struggling but handling the goblin to no one's surprise, as he is described as possibly being one of the best wizards of his time.
Professor Figg's renown could mean that he is the Headmaster of the school in Hogwarts Legacy. This would make sense, as he appears to be leading the charge against evil in the same way that Dumbledore does in the Harry Potter series. Nevertheless, his name appears as if it will be a familiar one in the wizarding world. Indeed, it is a returning name from Harry Potter, as Professor Figg shares his surname with Arabella Figg, better known as Mrs. Figg, the cat-breeding Order of the Phoenix member who monitors Harry's upbringing. Though this relationship between the two characters cannot be confirmed as of yet, other facets of Professor Figg and Hogwarts Legacy can be gleaned by the process of elimination.
While it would make sense for Professor Figg to be Headmaster in Hogwarts Legacy, there is already another character known to fulfil the role in the latter part of the nineteenth century: Phineas Nigellus Black. Fans of the Harry Potter series will know that Phineas is the relative of Sirius Black and Bellatrix Lestrange. Phineas is also known to have been one of Hogwarts's most unpopular Headmasters near the time of Hogwarts Legacy's 1800's setting, though the exact time he held this role is unclear. Nevertheless, he is more likely to be Headmaster over Professor Figg in Hogwarts Legacy, because even if Professor Figg is relatives with another character from Harry Potter, Mrs. Figg is nowhere near as popular or powerful as the Black family line.
With that in mind, discovering Professor Figg's role in the school can be partially deduced by looking at the other professors revealed in the trailer. The titles of Charms, Potions, Herbology, History, and Defense Against the Dark Arts Professors are off the table for Professor Figg, as the people who hold these positions were shown in the Hogwarts Legacy gameplay trailer. The classes left for fifth years (which is what the main character is) are thus Transfiguration, Astronomy, Arithmancy, Divination, and the Study of Ancient Runes. Of these, Ancient Runes sticks out the most, as the story of Hogwarts Legacy involves the awakening of an ancient magic and the quests of those attempting to obtain it. The trailer even shows Professor Figg helping the main character unlock some of this ancient magic, so it seems at least fairly likely that he will be the Professor of the Study of Ancient Runes in Hogwarts Legacy.
