Most Mortal Kombat Fans Have Never Seen Scorpion's Most Brutal Weapon
The weapon Scorpion uses throughout the Mortal Kombat franchise - the kunai attached to a chain or rope that he shoots out of his sleeve - is arguably just as iconic as he is. Scorpion mastered the ways of combat with the kunai during his life, which carried over into his undead resurrection. However, while Scorpion is known for using his kunai, the weapon he uses in the Mortal Kombat comic books is even more brutal.
In one story within the comic book Mortal Kombat #0 titled “Mortal Kombat: Kombatants” by Charles Marshall and Patrick Rolo, fans are introduced to all of the fighters who are to compete in Mortal Kombat. Those in attendance include Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Sub-Zero, and of course Scorpion, though Scorpion’s introduction is a bit more dramatic than the others’. In the established continuity of this version of Mortal Kombat, Sub-Zero killed Scorpion two years before this issue, so when Scorpion meets Sub-Zero again for the first time since his death, he threatens him and says he looks forward to their time in the ring together.
While telling Sub-Zero how much he looks forward to killing him, Scorpion brandishes his weapon in sinister anticipation. That weapon is similar to his classic kunai as it too is attached to a chain, but instead of a razor-sharp dagger, it's a mace. In this comic, Scorpion pulls off the same incredible feats he has always done with his kunai but with a mace instead, making the attacks and fatalities that much more brutal. Instead of being sliced and stabbed with a clean blade, Scorpion's opponents are brutalized by a supernaturally-powered mace, which is significantly more gruesome.
While this weapon is a more brutal deviation from his classic one, it is still far from the deadliest method of attack in Scorpion’s arsenal. Another classic move rears its deadly head in this issue - a move that Scorpion has used since his first appearance in the original arcade game. When he sees Sub-Zero again since he was murdered by his hand, Scorpion removes his face and presents his foe with the vision of his flaming, demonic skull. Afterwards, Scorpion breathed fire towards Sub-Zero in an attempt to get in the fighter’s head before they are to fight to the death in Mortal Kombat.
Scorpion’s fiery attack is and has always been a gnarly finisher, but during the fight there is no weapon at Scorpion’s disposal more effective at breaking down the enemy than his kunai on a chain. Though in this comic, Scorpion upped the savagery of his signature weapon by trading the blade out for a mace, making his iconic Mortal Kombat weapon even more brutal.
