Why Sebastian Stan Was Okay With Being Nude In Pam & Tommy
Sebastian Stan provided an enlightening perspective on his nude scenes in the Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy. Stan starred in the biopic series as Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee opposite Lily James as Lee's former wife Pamela Anderson. The show tracks their marriage from their first meeting through the explosive sex tape scandal that rocked the mid-90s. Pam & Tommy, which aired its finale on March 9, 2022, also starred Nick Offerman, Seth Rogen, Taylor Schilling, Pepi Sonuga, Spencer Granese, Mozhan Marnò, and Andrew Dice Clay.
One of the weirder elements of the series was the appearance of Tommy Lee's penis as a character, voiced by Big Mouth's Jason Mantzoukas. After getting high on ecstasy in episode 2, "I Love You, Tommy," he has a heart-to-heart with his animatronic penis as he decides whether or not to remain single and continue his womanizing ways. Although this version of Tommy Lee's penis is obviously somewhat abstracted and fantastical, it still put Sebastian Stan in the position of going full-frontal in some manner in Pam & Tommy.
When asked by THR about the recent crop of pop culture projects that have included male full-frontal nudity, Sebastian Stan shared his perspective on his own nude scenes in Pam & Tommy. He figures that "women have to have had to do it for so long, and now, it’s almost like, well, OK, it’s our turn now." As long as it's "not salacious" then he thinks "it is OK." Read the full quote below:
[I don’t] even think twice about it. I feel that women have to have had to do it for so long, and now, it’s almost like, well, OK, it’s our turn now. [I’ll do it] if it’s not salacious and not purely for grabbing-attention purposes. As long as it’s being approached from a conversational point of view, where everyone agrees on what it is and we’re all on the same page, then I think it is OK.
Stan is best known for playing the role of Captain America's friend Bucky Barnes, who later becomes the brainwashed Winter Soldier, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has been playing in that Marvel sandbox since 2011, most recently appearing as a co-lead in last year's Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. As that franchise has made a habit of including shirtless scenes of its male actors, including Stan, that's the level of nudity he was far more familiar with before going full frontal in projects like Pam & Tommy and his 2020 film Monday.
Pam & Tommy's actors displayed a lot of vulnerability and Stan's commitment to the role is clear to the show's viewers. Stan's willingness to subject himself to such an intimate and strange scene provided the energy that the rock and roller needed to properly leap off the screen. While the show is over and there is no need for a follow-up season considering that they covered the entire real-life story, hopefully the actor can find another project that harnessed that same energy from him.
