10 Things We Learned From The Bridgerton Trailer | Screen Rant
As the second season of the hit Regency-era drama Bridgerton draws closer, there's great anticipation for what the show holds for both old and new characters. The teasers and recently released trailer offered a little glimpse into the drama set to unfold this season, from Kate and Anthony's enemies-to-lovers love story to the queen's manhunt for the ever-elusive Lady Whistledown.
Although the trailer was mostly focused on Kate and Anthony, there were glimpses of the other characters too that gave hints of where the story could go. As such, the biggest reveals from the trailer include hints of the viscount's mission to find a wife and lots more about the rest of the Bridgerton family and other characters.
One of the highlights of the show for the characters and the audience is Lady Whistledown. Revealed at the end of season 1 to be Penelope Featherington and voiced by Julie Andrews, Lady Whistledown keeps the ton entertained and informed with her scandal sheets.
After the reveal of her identity to the audience at the end of the previous season, some wondered if Penelope would voice her narrations of the column instead. However, the trailer indicates that while she remains the author, Julie Andrews will continue giving a voice to her writing.
The announcement of Simon's departure after the end of season 1 left viewers devastated, as he had become a fan-favorite character on Bridgerton. Although Daphne was confirmed to still be part of the show, it wasn't clear how much of a role she'd play without her husband present.
From several scenes in the trailer of Daphne and her child with the rest of the Bridgertons, it seems viewers will still see a lot of her. Based on some of her lines in the trailer, her major objective this season is supporting Anthony in his search for a wife and advising him to choose love, contrary to his decision to keep all feelings out of the matter.
From the first season, Eloise proved to be a fiery young lady with great ambitions for her life that went beyond the marriage mart. The teaser and background from The Viscount Who Loved Me indicates Kate has a similar fiery passion when it comes to her family. The trailer showed the two ladies engaged in a conversation that suggests they're on friendly terms.
Although Bridgerton so far has been mostly family-centric, the friendship between Eloise and Kate would add an interesting dynamic to the mix. Based on Eloise's line to Kate, the two ladies seem mutually set on aggravating Anthony and it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
With most of the focus on Daphne and Simon's love story in the first season of Bridgerton, there wasn't much attention paid to Anthony's struggles with replacing his father as the family patriarch. Apart from a scene here and there, such as mentions of his attachment to Edmund's watch, the audience doesn't get a lot of insight into the grief Anthony continues to carry over the loss of his father.
Edmund and the impact his death had on Anthony and his view of love are mentioned several times in the trailer. Since the viscount is the central focus of the season, the show will finally shed more light on their relationship and Anthony's grief.
One of the most anticipated scenes from the second Bridgerton book is the one at the lake where Anthony saves Edwina after she falls in because of Newton. Anthony's chivalry was impressive here but the scene is mostly memorable because of Kate commanding Newton to shake off water from the lake near Anthony, getting him wet and furious.
The trailer showed a scene similar to this with a bit of a twist that's sure to make it even more exciting. In the scene, Anthony helps Kate up from a boat and while he's holding her hand, she abruptly pulls away from him and he trips over Newton and falls into the lake. From their body language and Kate's reaction to seeing Anthony soaked, the scene indicates their attraction for each other develops a little earlier than it does in the books.
Penelope's obvious crush on Colin went unreciprocated for all of season 1 but they remained on friendly terms with a bit of awkwardness after the Marina scandal. However, one of the prominent scenes of the two of them in the trailer showed Penelope looking sad and angry while Colin looked back at her awkwardly.
There are lots of Bridgerton fan theories that may explain what's happening between the two friends in this scene based on information from the books. One of those is that the show played out the scene where Penelope overhears Colin speaking to her brothers about never marrying her, resulting in tension between them.
When the first season of Bridgerton aired, viewers were impressed by its dedication to inclusiveness and diversity. The casting of Simone Ashley and Charithra Chandran as Kate and Edwina Sharma continues this tradition, and one scene from the trailer shows that it goes beyond a mere change of ethnicity.
The scene in question shows the Sharma sisters with Mary performing a Haldi ceremony, presumably for Edwina. This tradition is typically done before a wedding and it was exciting to see this in the trailer, highlighting how far the show is going in celebrating cultures and representation.
Anthony, Benedict, and Colin had a great relationship that the audience didn't really see much of during the first season. It was one of the best things about their story in the books but not so prominent in the show.
However, the trailer shows that the second season will remedy that through highlights of many scenes showing the brothers together during various occasions. From Anthony and Benedict's grooming scene where they discuss the former's prospects to marry to the three of them fencing, season 2 promises to show their brotherhood to the fullest.
Many adaptations of books to TV shows often result in big chunks of the story being left out in favor of the most essential parts. However, when it comes to Kate and Anthony's transition from enemies to lovers, the trailer hints at a portrayal of the relationship that's true to the source material, especially on the enemies part.
Half the trailer shows Kate's disapproval of him and Anthony's frustration with her in epic scenes like the Bridgertons' competitive game and a moment where she shuts the door in his face. Even though he was one of the most frustrating characters in Bridgerton season 1, scenes like these between him and Kate have already made him a favorite of many viewers for the new installment.
In season 1, the queen and Eloise formed an unlikely alliance to unmask Lady Whistledown until Eloise foiled Her Majesty's plans to capture her in the finale. It's unclear whether Eloise eventually discovers that Penelope is Lady Whistledown, especially since even in the books she doesn't find out with everyone else.
The trailer, however, shows that the queen is still hunting the gossip sheet writer down based on the line that says, "Lady Whistledown's words carry far too much import. We must entrap the scribbler." Since the reveal in the show was fast-tracked as compared to the books, the queen's manhunt may reveal Lady Whisteldown's identity to the rest of the characters much sooner than expected as well.
