A Fan-Favorite Green Lantern Was Just Brutally Murdered in DC Comics
Warning! Spoilers for The Human Target #6 by DC Comics
DC Comics just brutally murdered a fan-favorite Green Lantern, as Guy Garder was killed by Ice and Christopher Chance in the shocking sixth issue of The Human Target by DC Comics. In the issue, Ice freezes her jealous former boyfriend as Chance smashes his frozen face, leading the longtime Green Lantern's head to fall into pieces in front of both of them.
Christopher Chance is DC's Human Target, a private detective who is the master of disguise. In the series, Chance was hired by Lex Luthor to pose as him during an assassination attempt, which ended with him being poisoned and only having 12 days to live. Despite his short time to live, Chance investigates the Justice League International about who poisoned Luthor, leading him directly into the path of Ice, a hero he grows deep affection for. However, Ice's former flame, Guy Gardner, just lost his cool and enters a jealous rage upon seeing them together, leading Ice and Chance to have to take down the Green Lantern before he kills one of them.
In The Human Target #6 by Tom King, Greg Smallwood, and Clayton Cowles, Ice and Chance have a fight in a motel room after he suggests Fire, Ice's longtime superhero partner, might be responsible for Luthor's poisoning. However, after a subsequent romantic encounter with Ice at her home, Guy Gardner confronts both heroes. Gardner chokes Chance with a power ring construct, telling him he doesn't belong there. Ice makes it clear to Guy that she doesn't want to be with him and to leave. Gardner doesn't leave and antagonizes Ice, leading to a fight breaking out. Chance tries to shoot him with a gun, but the Green Lantern deflects the bullet back at him. In response, Ice freezes Gardner's entire body, leading Chance to use his remaining strength from the gunshot and poison to smash his head with a punch. Ice subsequently tips his body over, smashing it.
It's quite a twist: after Chance and Ice spent so much time finding out who tried to murder Lex Luthor, they commit an arguably worse crime. But, without stopping Gardner, there's no telling how much damage the jealous ex would have caused. He was unchained and acting irrationally, which makes him incredibly dangerous mixed with his powers. It was self-defense gone too far. Ultimately, Chance and Ice did what they believed needed to be done. Fortunately, for them, they realize they have cover as no one will miss Guy and that he can't be accounted for since he turned off his Green Lantern ring locator. So, unless someone is hired to investigate the investigator, the murder of Guy Gardner will likely go unpunished. The pair proceed to continue their romance, with Gardner's body shattered on the floor beside them.
The Human Target is about to go on a considerable hiatus, as the sixth chapter of the 12-issue DC Comics Black Label series leads readers with a lot to think about. When the comic returns, not only will Chance and Ice need to continue their investigation into who tried to kill Lex Luthor, but they will try to hide their own murder of the Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. No problem, right? The Human Target #6 by DC Comics is in stores now.
